Speedo sensor comparability

Does anyone know definitively whether the speedo sensors are interchangeable between the different engines or not?

Only the connector differs, earlier models had a different one from later. Don't know exactly when the change happened, I think it was somewere around 1991 model year. And the very early ones needed a mod which is described in the service manual, to move the sensor closer to the gears.

But why would you want to change a speedo sensor. The only time you really want another is when you measure open circuit if you are measuring at the speedo sensor's contacts. Usually the connector itself is the source of trouble. As a standard measure, I have cut away the connectors in both my 480's and soldered the ends together. See the howto section about this subject: https://volvo-480-europe.org/forum/view ... 4&p=213266

Also, there may be bad solder joints in the instrument cluster, causing the speedometer circuit to fail.
