Anything is possible, with the right amount of work and engineering.

I believe there was a thread somewhere where someone had completed it; the pics had long since dissapeared though

Yes you can, with the right amount of tools, skills and time. Alternatively, you could look at Renault F-type engines, because they fit the gearbox and drive axles.

The engine used in the Volvo 400-series (and the 1.7 in the 300-series) are derived from Renault F-type engines, with modified cilinder head.
1721cc = F3N
1794cc = F3P
1998cc = F3R
Gearboxes I think are derived from Renault JB3 (all except Turbo) and JC5 (Turbo) but I am not sure which engines/model years got the JB3 and which one the stronger JC5.

Later Renault developed uprated engines with 4 valves per cilinder, the 2.0-16V in the Renault Mégane Coupe (F7N engine) gives 150 bhp. Same kind of gearboxes, you only have to find one with electronic speedometer to connect it to the 480.
