mystery roar

Post by glasgowjim » Wed Jul 15, 2015 3:02 pm

This is a new one on me ...

1.7 litre engine 1992 (old style engine mounts)

car has for the last couple of weeks sounded as if it has a sports exhaust !!!

engine performance is not affected acceleration idle fine

have checked......

exhaust no leaks
manifold no leaks or splits
is not burning oil /losing water e
rear engine mount seems ok (engine does not throw forward or back)
weird thing is it doesn't sound so bad from the outside but inside the car it does sound loud

a bit stumped on this one

this weekend I will try swapping over the old style engine mount and bracket for the new version . Already had a look and whoever designed this bracket really should see a doctor.

any ideas ?????

I've had something like this which turned out to be a loose panel inside the exhaust vibrating. At another time it was a center pipe just not fitting right, but you checked that.

Had the same on my previous Celebration. Sounded like a Ferrari on full chat inside. Outside just a wee bit noisy. This occurred three weeks after fitting a new back box; the only noticeable symptom was a bit more water vapour condensing from the exhaust. It turned out to be a loose baffle at the back end of the box.

Rob H.
The car in front is possibly going to be a C30 - and it's staying there!

when the front wheel bearing went on the C30, it sounded more like a banshee than a ferrari!!

it still made it from Perth to ABZ, (via Loch Rannoch) but we took the coast road to keep speed down
