Starting problem

Post by yorkshire480 » Fri Apr 24, 2015 6:20 pm

Yesterday after a short run to the shops my 94 ES refused to restart. After doing all the usual checks I disconnected the battery for 10 mins and she then restarted getting me back home - thank God.

However today - Nothing, nada, zilch.

The engine turns over fine. The starter motor is relatively new, the battery is a few months old and has plenty of juice (I tried a boost start to be sure).

I've disconnected the battery for an hour or two but to no avail.

I've pulled the spark plugs and they look just fine, as does the dizzy cap and leads - again all pretty new.

My suspicions have turned to the fuel supply of which I've less experience.

Fuel pump fuse is fine
I think I can hear the fuel pump engage when the ignition key is turned to position 1 or 2 I think it is. Is it a fairly high pitched buzzy sound I'm listening for?

I can hear relays clicking in the engine bay and I've pulled and reseated them.

And yes, to quote Steely Dan, there's gas in the car! Three bars worth.

Having done the usual searches I'm thinking temp sensor fault or flywheel sensor fault at the moment.

What have I missed? Suggestions please!

Problem solved!

In the recent heat the connector for the crankshaft sensor had been pulled apart slightly as the pipe it was cable tied to has expanded and contracted.
A quick spray of contact cleaner and reseating the connector has sorted it.

I think I'll remove and clean the sensor anyway.

Something and nothing - the best sort of fault!
