Throttle cable electric connector?

Post by gingherheed » Tue Jan 13, 2015 3:18 pm

Hi everyone,
I have a 1988 car which has an electrical connection attached to the throttle cable. I have had some work done on the car and the mechanic has Been unable to re connect this and he tells me that when he started the car it revs highly. He would like to know what the connection does, ie is it a failsafe if your cable goes when you are on the road so you can at least retain power to drive safely off the road. Or is it something else??

Thanks in advance.

In the early days a switch connected to the throttle cable at WOT made the windshield wipers, if active, run full speed, switched off the AC for more power and may be some gimmicks more. The car revving highly could be some byproduct of your mechanic's doing.

I seem to remember something similar from the B18E engine in the 89 480 I had many years ago. I'm fairly certqin the switch was a signal for the ECU so it knew when it was supposed to be controlling the idle.

Sorry - just re-read the original post. Ignore what I said - I was thinking of the switch on the throttle body. James is correct - it's a switch to signal the CEM that the wiper speed should be increased, and air-con compressor disengaged (if it has air-con).
