high idle

All the information you need on engine-problems is here. The engine includes the Turbo-charger, airco and everything else you'll find under the bonnet.

high idle

Post by ianyoung » Sat Apr 26, 2014 5:26 pm

Hello
I'am new to this forum, so i would like to say Hi to all the 480's lovers :)

Recently i've chenged the engine in my 480 from standard B18F to another B18F but in the better condition.
After the change I can't get along with idle control. Everything seems to be allright but in fact its not.
When you start the engine revs go up to 1500 and stays there. The funny fact is that the "new" engine worked perfectly in the donner car.
Please help :)

Greetings form Poland
Ian

Check the bolts on the inlet manifold. If air comes in it's also raising the idle.

Check for other possible air leaks as well as the manifold, also try your old ICV if you haven't swapped it over.

(That's idle control valve by the way, not sure what the layout is on the n/a 1.7 but it will be a little unit that controls airflow past the throttle butterfly)

Also, don't these engines set a high tickover below a certain temperature? Could it be a temp sensor issue, might it be calibrated differently to the old one. I guess glasgowjims idea with the ECU would have the same effect as changing components back to ones that were controlling/being controlled by the ECU.

A good way of checking for vacuum leaks is to go and buy yourself a cheap cigar and blow the thick smoke all around the different components of the induction system, if air is being sucked in anywhere it shouldn't you will clearly see the smoke being drawn in through the leak. (Engine running obviously)

Thanks guys for all the tips. I'm waiting with ECU change till the last minute coz i dont want to mess around with Immobiliser modul and changing whole ignition barrel. Firstly i'll try to clean the ICV, and look for the leaks for the third time :)
As to temperature sensor i've messeured it and compared to the previous one and it seems to be allright.

Thanks again and have a nice sunday.

Ian there is no immobilser in the ECU

seriuosly just change over the ECu its an easy job first before you start faffing about with the icv.

Given the fact that the engine worked well in the donor car just swop over the ecu first

Is the replacement engine from a 440/60?

Very late ones had an immobiliser ;)

The engine is form another 480 form 92 i think:)
You are all undoubtedly right. There is no Immo in the ECU but there is one aside and if you change only the ECU they won't be communicate with each other properly.
I guess :)))

If it's an aftermarket immobiliser, it won't make any difference as it'll be spliced into the loom of the scrap car ;)

Update ;)

After checking possible leeks and changing a few gaskets just to be sure. I found out that one of the lads who helped me with swapping the engine changed the plugs between the intake air temp sensor and the cooling liquid sensor ;)
