MOT fail - Call for emission gurus

Post by SteveR » Sun Aug 11, 2013 11:27 am

So, first time I have had a fail on emissions ok on tickover fail above that. Garge syas I need a new lambda and cat.

See here for values Image

With these figures would a blast up teh dual carriageway sort it or are there any cat cleaners - the garage think it is clogged with carbon due to driving locally.

I see <reactcatalyst> show a £37 one and a £132 one - what is the difference? :?

I would like to source the new items myself as they have quoted £180 for the cat.

It also failed on rear wheel arch rust at the front bottoms where they are within 30cm of suspension and seat belt points.
Also handbrake but I have checked and adjusted.

Why doesnt my suddy pic show?

I'd suggest getting it Terracleaned. I don't wish to start too much of a debate but some people have done this on here and recommend it. I haven't done it with a 480 but my Citroen BX benefitted from it. See if there is someone near you who does it. You can look at the Terraclean website then they will tell you where your nearest equipped garage is if you contact them.

I paid £75 for the service.

This is the local quote
Prices start from £95 plus VAT for under 2 litre vehicles and £105 plus vat which is well on the way to a new cat so will have a think.
Many thanks for the lead - had not heard of terraclean so must have missed the ed china show.

Okay, seems sensible if you suspect the cat is blocked

Do you know about the CO potentiometer which requires the engine to be hot (electric fan running) and a probe up the car's arse to set correctly. Maybe you could get it set-up when the cat is replaced and you have access to an exhaust meter at the garage that is doing the MOT.

I deigned to ask the mot man about temperature and the almost huffy reply was that it had been run long enough and that the second test requires 180 sec of engine running. However, the oil temp shown above is 60.
I had a Suzuki WagonR that failed on emissions and when I took it to the Suzuki agent it passed as he said it had to be 80 to get a true reading.
I will talk to the Terraclean people as they are also mot people.
Watch this space :)
