a few questions/queries

Post by shaun_469 » Fri Jun 14, 2013 4:35 pm

Hi everyone! ill introduce my self first quick!

my names shaun, im from bristol and have just bought a volvo 480 turbo (in paris blue if that makes a difference! :D )

i looked at this car over a year ago, in a garage, and didnt buy it as my wife wanted a convertible, anyway, i went back a few days ago, and it was still there :o so i thought i would treat myself and took it for a test drive, it had been stood for over a year as mentioned, and when i took it out it was stuttering and missing if i put any load on it what so ever, though, i still liked it and the guy said he would get it all sorted out, anyway, i picked it up a few days ago and its much better, but it was still missing under any heavy load (at about 4000 rpm with foot down, would suddenly lose all power then pick up again a second later, felt like turbo kicking in then hitting foot on brake) but only did this in 1st and 2nd, a;; other gears the turbo gauge would point straight up and maybe slightly over to about 1-2 o'clock position, so i took it back to him today (he has a unit by my work place and doesnt mind looking at it for me!) and he put carb cleaner in through the throttle body, and we cleaned teh idle valve with carb cleaner, as the idle was also a bit lumpy (and low on cold start?) idle seems smoother now, but still low on cold start, any ideas?, but now, on driving home, the turbo will now boost right up into the red on the gauge (i dont know how far it will go, as dont want to blow it up!) but seems to hold there on the red or just about halfway in (is that normal??) and it also feels like its missing a bit (stutters a little bit when building up revs?) any help would be great as to whats wrong or right! if you want anymore info then please let me know!

thanks in advance, and nice to meet you all!

Hi and welcome.

I think it would be worth a check to see of it's had a manual boost controller fitted.

If it has and it's not ran for a good while then the engine's probably not getting the extra fuel it needs either because there's a load of crap in the system or it's just gone off and is no longer strong enough.

Both these problems with stale petrol would effect it anyway, with or without an MBC, so I'd stick half a tank of Optimax in with half a bottle of Redex and see what happens afterwards.

If it's boosting that high without an MBC then your wastegate could be stuck closed so excess boost can't escape... Not good!

Thinking about it though, your over boosting problem only started after your mechanic was fiddling, so he could have knocked off a vacuum line to the wastegate or similar, that would cause the wastegate to stay closed.

Good luck!

Hammers can't fix a 480!!!

do you have a picture of where to look for the hose which may have been knocked off? i have no idea where the MBC would be either! lol, all he did was take off the air hose to the throttle body and spray carb cleaner in, so i cant see how he would have dislodged a hose? any way, thanks for the info! ive filled it up with normal fuel since i bought it, you think it would be worth changing the fuel filter as he said it ran out of fuel when he drove it over from his forecourt? may have dragged some crap through?, where is the wastgate to so i can see if it is stuck? cheers, shaun!

Hi Shaun nice choice of colour :)

I agree with Steve - could be the hoses to or from the boost solenoid. Or fuel filter?

Do a search on this forum for boost solenoid there should be quite a bit of info

Cheers,
James

Example:

http://www.volvo-480-europe.org/forum/v ... t+solenoid

The red circled thing is one type of manual boost controller, the small box bolted to the bulkhead/scuttle panel to the right of this (with three boost hoses running to it) is the boost solenoid or a turbo control valve TCV. There are different types of MBC but the idea is they limit the pressure seen by the wastegate so it will open later.

Another pic of the solenoid, this time by some nugget who can't take photos i.e. me.....second photo below....

Hi all,

I will start leaving more spaces in my replies as, I notice it makes them easier to read!

I went out and looked at hoses last night, and the black one which goes into the turbo control valve was actually snapped in half and had previously been repaired...by using insulation tape to join the 2 back together

So I've now put a piece of metal tube between the two and jubilee clipped it on, so hopefully should be all fixed now! Not tested yet though!

Is getting a mbc a good idea? Thanks for the pictures by the way!

Any ideas with the cold start low idle? We had to adjust the idle screw on the throttle body to get it to idle at about 900 as it was idling near 1200 before, also if you dab the throttle whilst its idling its like the revs drop before it picks up, any ideas on that as well? Thanks in advance and sorry for all the questions!

Nice one Shaun, hopefully that easy fix will sort it

About the idle speed....could be an air leak if it bogs a little when dabbing the throttle? Maybe idle control valve (ICV) is stuck open and needs a clean...

Suggest you avoid fitting an MBC until the car is running ok and has done for a little while . The big danger with MBC's are you set it up incorrectly and wreck the engine.

In fact just forget about an mbc and buy a remapped ignition unit from Robou.
