engine turns off when getting hot
Hi to everyone, i have a volvo 480 Turbo 1991, for a couple of days i've got a problem. The engine is turning off at about 90 degrees(when the cooler starts) and the fuel pump starts working. i can leave it for about 20 minutes so the engine temperature is getting lower, then it starts and works again. My oppinion is that somewhere, somehow there is certainly a problem with the fuel getting to the engine. WHAT ABOUT YOU?

Re: engine turns off when getting hot
can you be more specific / detailed about what is happening and we can help.
Cooler do you mean radiator fan because it shouldnt go on at 90 degrees. What have you checked so far ?
What is you idle like ?
the more info clearly stated the better.

Well, right, it's the radiator fan. And i don't suppose that it is smth connected with the fan, The engine stops receiving fuel at this temperature. I did not check anything. the idle is 800-900 rpm.

Re: engine turns off when getting hot
Yep, you can check it yourself. You need multimeter.
Read this: http://www.picoauto.com/applications/lambda-sensor.html
Check also the catalytic converter. Maybe it's broken.

the catalytic converter is empty to my knowledge. But i don't think it would affect this! And i did not understand how to use the multimeter and check the lambda sensor(where and how to connect it). Can somebody really help me?

Re: engine turns off when getting hot
I had a similar problem years ago with the engine stalling when warm but this was on a 1987 car , turned out to be a faulty engine temperature sensor, however I believe the later car's ECU could compensate for faulty readings, however there is a chance your problem could be ECU related
Back to the other reply, If you cant check the Lambda sensor yourself, you should bring it to a mechanic/Auto Electrician, they cant charge that much to take a simple reading
