no air con 95 celeb
hi folks,
i bought my car with known dysfunctional air-conditioning but now the weather is warming up id really like it to work! i have a reciept in the service history for it being regassed in 2008, and upon trying one of the cans of r134 you get in halfords the system would appear to still be full. it doesnt blow hot, but it doesnt seem much colder (if at all) that what i get from selecting "vent" on the ac panel.
my dad stood at the front of the car with me turning the air con on and off and he suspects the compressor isnt cutting in as the revs at idle dont change on operation of the ac. A mate has also pointed out that perhaps as my cooling fan isnt working (ill get round to fixing that!) then perhaps thats locking out the air con?! is there something in the cem that will stop the air con running if the fan is inoperative?!
any tips, suggestions to try apprieciated!

Cem has nothing to do with aircon.

Re: no air con 95 celeb
I know for one thing that the radiator fan is supposed to cut in at the first speed when the aircon is turned on

You should hear the compressor kick in as you switch it on (might take a fraction of a second).
It could be anything, but when mine was playing up, I ended up taking apart my VEM and finding lots of dry joints to re-solder.

Re: no air con 95 celeb
ok thats what i suspected. ive been driving the car for several thousands of miles now with ac ON but no fan and no compressor cutting in! perhaps the compressor is seized and its just spinning on the clutch. theres definately a squeely pulley from what i can see as i doused the drive belt in talc to stop it squeeling and now something else - possibly compressor?! is making noises.

Re: no air con 95 celeb
could this be relay based then?! also what is the vem?! if it is indeed dry joints then i can foresee a lot of work... or try the vem from my spares car. the system definately has gas in it. (thinking the compressor auto doesnt kick in if gas is low)
Or would it be a move to call in an air con specialist to see what the crack is?

The VEM (ventilation electric module) is the thing on the dash with the buttons+slider for the ventillation. I'm currently after a spare as the buttons for aircon on is a tad dodgy-one has to give it a sharper shove than I like doing, I expect its due to a dodgy solder joint but I don't want to make a mistake and have no backup!

Re: no air con 95 celeb
right- made a little progress! got to my spare celeb. swapped the vem in from that one (after taking it apart and finding the circuit board to be mint!) fired it into my car and the ventilation distribution works fine but on hitting any of the three air con buttons the engine idle DOES NOT change and the fan doesnt come on at its low speed!!
what does anyone suggest i try next? take the car to an air con place to check the gas pressure? i read somewhere there is two gas systems in operation? freon/r134a if either is low then it locks out the compressor?
also the ambient temp being below 10oC locks out the system. it was 12/ 13oC yesterday...
is there a relay perhaps that just feeds the air con cause it could be that?
rather annoyingly this vem has the right hand bulb blown! argh the other one was all lit up! gna have to take it back out to sort that!

There is a relay for the aircon-the diagram can be found on this link http://www.volvo-480-europe.org/volvo480/downloads.php

Re: no air con 95 celeb
aha thanks! for all i know it could be a duff relay... its at the very least something else to try!
going to be even more blonde than i normally am: where IS the relay box?! haynes says its in the aquarium to the drivers side. I know this to be the case with the earlier cars as mine just has a black cover there that looks into the drivers footwell!

Re: no air con 95 celeb
Depending on year it can be in 1 or 2 places. alongside the fuel and ignition relays up above the fusebox . Try that first then there could be a single relay at the centre side of glove box remove glovebox and the kick plate underneath to see everything.
