Boost pressure
Can anyone tell me how much psi is indicated between the end of the yellow scale and the beginning of the red scale?
regards!

Re: Boost pressure
IIRC it would be around 13 psi mark. From what i recall reading on here, the richmod gives about 12/13 psi somewhere just before cutout occurs and from what i have read people saying from owning a richmod. they says that now there cars boost meter travels all the way to the end of the yellow area. Im no expert on the standard volvo guage but would seriously say maybe buy a cheap guage in psi and hook it up to the rear pipe of that unit so you can be sure. i say in psi because these cars cut out around the 1 bar mark so would be better to future fine tune your boost levels with a guage in psi.
It could be detrimental to the health of your engine if you know what i mean.
I'm sure if im mistaken i will get corrected soon enough lol.

in this video is a volvo 480 T with a analogic boost gauge, mounted in parallel with the std one.
and at the end of the yellow scale, or middle ot the red one points 1 bar!

IT boosts at 12psi in 1st/2nd and 3rd gear , and then goes to 14psi in 4th and 5th gear , its the way rich designed it , you will always get i slight variation from car to car . Some people get 175bhp with a richmod other 160bhp etc .
cheers

Re: Boost pressure
Do we know what stock boost is (or, ideally, base boost)? Mine goes to the end of the yellow and just about into the red (because that's how I thought it *should* be based on what Saab did). So need to adjust it back down and have a chat with Robou probably
Re: Boost pressure
either 9 or 8 psi , i cant remember exactly but one or the other

Re: Boost pressure
Mine boosts up into and past the red, goes about 1cm off the coloured bit on the dial, and that's full boost through every single gear. Touch the accelerator about an inch in 5th and it fully boosts... I've been told its running 25psi of boost but need to clarify that some how at some point

Re: Boost pressure
Just waiting for the report of a blown engine then. The boost control solenoid has obviously been removed, thereby disabling the safety built in by Volvo.ClioRSiTurbo wrote: I've been told its running 25psi of boost but need to clarify that some how at some point

Re: Boost pressure
If you ever inspected the mechanics of the turbo meter you will know that what it indicates is at the most a wild guess. Any conversation based on the indication of different meters is useless. They wisely put only two figures (-1 and +1) at both ends of the scale just for the looks.
Too old to bother

I will take a look to double check it hasn't.chriskay wrote:Just waiting for the report of a blown engine then. The car has been fitted with a decompression plate, had keronite applied to the cylinder head, pistons and rings totally £850 take a look at their site http://www.keronite.com/
Has also been fitted with a GT2860RS turbo and has been super richmodded.

Re: Boost pressure
Oh and also been fitted with a manual boost controller, magnacore leads, and a very very nice induction kit. 2nd of may my car is booked in to have a fast road black diamond stage 2 Kevlar clutch fitted and this Wednesday I'm fitting black diamond combi drilled and grooved discs all round with black diamond fast road pads, has cost me just over a grand in the parts alone.
I've found easily over 2 grand of receipts for this car, no expense has been spared by the owner who carried out the turbo conversion.

I like to 'reopen' this thread because I've made some measurements with manometer at an original turbo a while before. The results compared to the boost pressure gauge:
- pointer vertically: 5 PSI / 0.35 bar
- between yellow and red field: 11.6 PSI / 0.8 bar
- at the end of the red field (horizontal): 14.5 PSI / 1 bar
In normal driving, the boost pressure goes up to 5 PSI. At full throttle it takes one or two seconds and boost pressure goes shortly up to 8 PSI and in the next moment it falls down to 6.5 PSI.
regards.

Re: Boost pressure
Thank for that reply.
i`m sure that all 480 owners are now clear regarding the boost pressure!
thanks !

Re: Boost pressure
i have another question regarding boost.
1st and 2nd gear indicator goes at the middle of the red scale, and on 3rd gear goes horizontal and at about ~5500 rpm it falls back to the middle of the red scale. why???
oh, and on 4th and 5ft gear the indicator goes all the way to where it says "+1 bar".
is that good?
