Auxiliary Water Pump Stays on!
Hi, when i was given my turbo, i was told the only thing wrong with it, was that if you stop the engine, the fuel pump keeps going and flattens the battery, and that this could be stopped by turning the key to the half way position, and back.
My investigatins on the forum seem to suggest its the aux water pump, and that although its meant to stay on, it should switch off after 20 secs.
It doesn't however! and apparently has done it from new...the owner got used to it and forgot to mention it to Volvo at any of it's ten services!!
Any ideas?
Cheers,
John

Hey John!!!
You've been misinformed matey! The aux water pump for the Turbo stays on until the turbo is down to a certain temperature!I have a '94/M plate Turbo Auto-thats does it and so did my previous one,a '92/K Turbo. The fuel pump sound will come from the back anyhow, this hum will come from the front chap!

It does stop! It took about three mins though, after having the engine on for 3 seconds.
The thought that the prev owner has been doing the ignition twice for 10 years is hilarious. Hope this hasn't hurt the turbo...i don't imagine it has, its silent and smoke free. It's never been driven hard anyway, owned by a middle aged lady from new.
Thanks a lot for your help!

My 95 turbo doesnt have an aux water pump at all.... or if it does, it's well quiet - themartinholmesuk wrote:The aux water pump stays on forever (seems like it) I go inside the house. I come back out and it's still running.
engine fan kicks in automagically and off again once stopped after a run, but I don't have the noticable "other" noise of an aux water pump that younger turbos I know have...

Perhaps yours has seized up gaz? One of ours didn't work, and we took it apart to find it rusted solid.
Its bolted on the right hand (looking in engine bay)front box section, below the ABS pump and stuff.
87 D plate Es definitely never had one, must have been something they added later.

I'll have a look next time I see it, but then again, my celebration doesn't have one either... In fact I've never owned a 480 that has had one noticably working/installed - I know Fnord's does because of the noise it makes, but not one of my 4 480s have done that, although the first 2 were '89 ESs, so that explains it, but as I say the celebration doesnt seem to have one either, and as that's near mint...
I'll need to look to be absolutely sure... anyone got a pic?

My '89ES has one.... and it just happens that I have a picture of it, from when I was asking "what's that?", when I first bought my 480!
I've not noticed on one my 2.0ES, and that appears to have exactly the same engine layout as your Celebration Gaz, from your pics (ABS controller, air-con, etc).

Didn't somebody say it was for cooling the turbos (hydrostatic?) bearings? Surely as an es/celebration is none turbo they don't do this, or have another function?!

I think there are two pumps. One is an auxilary pump for the general cooling system, and continues pumping the water round for up to 10 minutes after stopping the engine. The other is a turbo specific pump, and is designed just to cool the turbo system, in addition to the auxilary pump for the rest of the system.
My 1.7 '89 ES, certainly has the auxilary pump, as I hear it every time I turn the engine off. My only experience of a turbo 480, was Lee's, and I know that his had the turbo pump, becuase it was quite noisy, although didn't stay on for long, once it had switched off, the auxilary pump could still be heard running.
It does appear though that the 2.0's in any flavour (ES, Celebration, and I'm assuming GT) don't have the water pump at all. Either that, or it doesn't work on both my 2.0ES, and Gaz's 2.0 Celebration!
Ben.

ben, your almost right. the first turbo's have an injector cooling, which is not really a pump but a little fan, like a hairdryer. it cools the injectors. later proofed this system to be a bit a long shot, and together with a lot of other gadgets it disappeared from the 480
so all(?) have an auxilary pump, an electric radiator fan, and some also have an injector cooling.

Just following up on this topic to find out if i should be concerned. Everytime i turned off my engine i could hear a very noisy pump for about 10 seconds on my 1990 turbo, but recently it doesn't make a sound anymore....i guess it has broken?
Can anyone tell me what the dangers are and how easily it can be replaced and at what cost?
thanks

Re: Auxiliary Water Pump Stays on!
Well, I have to warm up this topic, unfortunately.
My auxiliary water pump acting quite weird, and I would like to ask your help to solve it:
So, as far as I know, normaly it works when you stop the engine, from 25sec until a couple of minutes, depends on the temperature, and even if the engine is cold, you turn on the ingition, then off -> it starts for 25 sec. Also while the engine is running, if the temperature high, it turns on.
Mine works a bit more "active".
- When I turn ignition on, and the engine is not stone cold, it starts. (stone cold I mean: not used for days)
- While the engine is running, it works (does not matter what temperature). All the time.
- When I stop the engine it still works for a couple of minutes, but it seems to me that lot longer than it should. (11-13minutes often)
The engine is a '92 modell year B18FT.
What controls this pump? Is it a relay or the ECU? I assume there is some sensor wich tells the pump when to go, maybe this broken? If it could be, wich sensor it is?!
Actually this is not a big problem, because it works, even much harder then it should.
But it is not normal, and I want to know why.
