B18U/B20Fchain driven oil pump engines?

Hello!

My name is David and I'm more into Renaults really(I hope you won't mind that), but I do love Volvo 480 series.
As said in the thread title I'm interested to know if any of the above or any else 440/460/480 series B18/B20 engines have chain driven oil pump?
The reason I'm asking that are the "aux shaft" driven oil pump bearings.

They're are not available from Renault anymore and if they are, they have a astronomic prices. I also don't like the whole concept of having oil pump driven like that, the chain is much nicer way, in my honest opinion.
Few extra information I got so far:

Renault engines with aux shaft driven oil pump:
-all F7P(1.8 16V engine used in Clio 16V and R19 16V)
-early F3P/F3R(Renault versions of B18U and B20F, that can be found in R19, Clio, Laguna, Megane, Scenic)
-F7R 700/710(2.0 16V engine used in Clio Williams and Megane 16V)

Renault engines with chain driven oil pump:
-F7R 714(later Meganes)
-later F3P(got this info from Clio(91-98) Haynes manual, but it's not specific which paticular engine(F3P ???), this is also the reason I'm asking about this here(maybe later Volvo B18/B20 engines have chain driven oil pump?), on Renault forums no one knows for sure)

I hope you'll help a fellow Renault/Volvo enthusiast.

The Volvo 1721cc B18's are the same as the multipoint F3P 8v Renault engines, the 8v B20F is the F3R from memory. (The turbo versions where tuned and strenghtend for Volvo by Porsche to 170hp, Volvo detuned them to 120hp by the way.)So no chain driven oilpump. In the B20F (and B18U but that monopoint engine was only used in the 440/460) the oilpump is upgraded by Volvo to 13 gear whereas the other B18's egines have a 8 gear oilpump. These engines came with an internal oil heatexchanger. Never ever heard from anyone that the oilpumps cause problems, neither in the B18 and in the B20F. So you're the first with an oilpump problem that I know of! These engines are pretty bulletproof when they are regularly serviced.

Thanks for reply.

I must admit that pictures up there are not mine. Pump itself isn't a problem I know that, it's just that I want to properly rebuild my engine without having spend big money on two bearings.
So none of B18 or B20 engines used in 400 series had a chain driven oil pump? Can anyone confirm this?

Help much appriciated. :D

Here's a drawing of the upgraded B20F&B18U oilpumpgear and the other B18's gear from the engine manual. I only have it available in german. But the drawings speak for themself, all oilpumps are geardriven.

Yep, I see. Thanks for your help. :) Did anyone changed this bearings? Does Volvo have them in stock? And how much are they?

Hi David,

It is rare that a bearing is specific to an engine, more likely an engine designer looks through a catalogue of bearings and says that one will do. A good engine rebuilders should be able to find a generic bearing to suit. Take the shaft and bearing (and maybe the block) and they should be able to come up with a match.

Yeah you're probably right. This bearing is used in a lot Renault/Volvo engines. Must be more that 10 at least. I plan to ask about this bearings at my local Volvo dealer(only 5 min walk from me). I got part numbers from a catalog which I found on the main side. Hopefully they'll be able to get me this two bearings I need at reasonable price. I'll also ask about 13 gear oil pump.
I'll keep you informed about this.

Cheers

David

Great news people!!! I've been at Volvo today and ordered this two bearings. :D Price for one is 11€ so 22€ in total. That's less than 20 pounds. I think that's proper bargain compared to 190€ at Renault. Oil pump is somewhere around 200€ at Volvo.

Cheers for all the help. :hopping:

David

Wow, that's easy earned! I'm used to lower prices at the R dealer, this time it's the otherway round. Maybe the oilpump is cheaper at the R dealer, though I'm not sure if the 13gear pump is a pure Volvo upgrade.

I'm also not sure about 13 gear pump, I think top of the line Renault engines(F7R 700/710) may have it, but as said, I'm not sure. Oil pump at Renault is 160 pounds I think, but it may be even more and I think they're 8 gear. I'm gonna ask about the main shaft(B20F=93mm stroke) also. We'll see. :)
