High fuel consuption

Post by sidnak » Fri Feb 25, 2011 2:00 am

Hi,

I got 1988, Volvo 480 1,7 Turbo 160000 Mileage.

My winter consuption (economic drive) according computer is...combined 31 MPG
city 25 MPG
but real consuption is around 21 MPG.

Friend of mine checked car 100 miles ago and he changed plugs, oil, air filter and thermostat (was broken and consumption was even higher).
Lambda sensor should be ok.

Could be high consuption caused by ECU from another Volvo 480 or by something else?

Thanks for advice

You say you replaced the ecu. Was there the same coloured sticker on top of it as the original? You should only replace the ecu with the same coloured one as the original. The ecu's changed depending on modelyear, another coloured ecu could cause all kind of problems incl. higher fuel consumption. Other suspects for low mileage are the lambda or a bad MAF sensor.

Well, if it is a ecu from a '94 you can't place it in a '88. Could very well explain the high fuel consumption. Be carefull when replacing the ecu always disconnect the battery beforehand to prevent a short out of the ecu!
