Cold running fault on 460 1.8 sorry it's not a 480!

All the information you need on engine-problems is here. The engine includes the Turbo-charger, airco and everything else you'll find under the bonnet.

Cold running fault on 460 1.8 sorry it's not a 480!

Post by champion1990 » Sat Nov 13, 2010 8:25 pm

Just wondered if anyone could help with a cold running fault as above.

Sorry it's not a 480 but i assume the 460 with the 1.8i is the same engine???

From cold needs plenty of throttle to start then won't idle for about 5 mins after start-up & needs throttle to keep revs up with handbrake needed to stop otherwise stalls straight away as revs drop right off when slowing.

Starts straight away again with more throttle needed.

When semi warm & above runs like a dream & also fine starting up when engine is warm.

Any help greatly appreciated :D

The 1.8i from the 440/460 is the B18U engine. It's the same engine as the B20F with a smaller bore. But it has monopoint injection instead of multipoint as the B20F has. The 480 is never been equipped with the B18U.
James gave a good advice, check the enginetempsensor (which I prever to call coldstartsensor as there are several enginetemp.sensors) It's located under the most rhd sparkplug.

iroll as far as i am aware on a N/A is that only 1 engine temp sensor if for the engine the rest are for the info sensor which i dont think is equipped on the 440/460, Correct me if i am wrong and let me know where they all are, so i can have a look and clean em as i am having the same problem...... with new temp sensor/Cold start sensor!!! :badmood:

There's only 1 coldstartsensor for the ecu but several other temp. sensors. For the watertemp. in the display (the 440/460 and 480S have a temp.meter in the dash), in the radiator to actuate the fan, temp.sensor for the oil and for 480's equipped with injectorcooling also a temp.sensor in the head to actuate that one. So it is more specific to call it coldstartsensor to prevent any confusion with other temp.sensors. On all types of engines the coldstartsensor is located under the most right sparkplug. The watertemp.sensor for the dash gauge/display is located opposite of the coldstartsensor in the head (bulkside), it has only 1 wire attached to it.
