GEARBOX OIL

Post by esta » Fri Aug 22, 2008 4:04 pm

OK, Volvo want £45+VAT and wont be in till Tues-what is the rating? Volvo seem to think there is "no rating so you cant get it from anywhere else"

Please someone tell me there is a real rating and that I can go to a car spares and get some! And for a lot cheaper hopefully!!

Read JT's engine swap thread. Needs to be phosphor bronze safe as Volvo uprated the original Renault gearbox's to make them more reliable.

Normal GB/Oil tends to attach the bronze components over time, and will cause damage. Chemically its the sulphur used in most modern gearbox oils as the EP additive

[Shouldn't this be in the Power Transmission Section :P]

Shit! I was recomended 'Morris Lubricants SS' API GL1-5 high EP which I'm assuming means packed with Phosphorus and Sulphur? Although it is stated as being 'universal'. I had no idea copper/bronze was used in gearboxes anymore.

RG, you may have cost my parts guy his fingers, the voices are telling me to introduce my lump hammer to them one-at-a-time

lol yeah I did cheers Ross.

ITs odd cos the manual says that the 480s up to 1988 can use SAE 80W, but Volvo are clearly not willing to give away the secrets about the post '89 models-not when morons like me could end up paying over £50 for it!

Thanks for sorting that out for me guys, saved me a packet! :D Just gotta find somewhere selling some suitable oil! :D

Hmm Halfrauds do some....£9.99/l and the old box takes 3.4l!! Joy to my wallet! Seriously, this car loves keeping the weight off my pocket!! Still £30 (and whatever discount I get) is still way cheaper than Volvos! although it doesnt say in the advert whether its suitable as Ross mentioned...

Why it's bad m'kay

Post by rgreenhalf » Sat Aug 23, 2008 12:58 pm

Hi Eem,

I'm by no means an expert on the subject, however numerous posts on here discuss the fact that the 480 gearboxs contain 'bronze' components, which is essentially a yellow metal. This is true of all gearbox's post '89.

Now as far as I can make out, and after conducting a little research (As I need to get more gearbox oil myself). Millers TRX or Volvo own brand are the two most common safe oils, these are sulphur free oils which will not impact the bronze components.

Links / Info:

Why should I choose non-EP straight oils for my classic car?

Depending on the age, make and model non-EP gear oils may be required for use in gearboxes and final drives. Certain designs contained a lot of phosphor-bronze (copper containing) components that are sensitive particularly to the sulphur extreme pressure (EP) additive. The sulphur attacks the copper and destroys the integrity of the meshing gear surfaces.

Pre '89 Boxes do not suffer the same fate, as they did not contain the bronze components. After all the work you've put into Lula, it'd be a shame to damage it from putting the wrong oil in, long term. Short term, I'm not sure on the damage, but I can't see it being *that* bad.

@ Esta - best bet is Millers by the sound of things, I wouldn't trust Halfrauds, especially not at that price.

@ RG - That 'Honest John' guy has basically copied word for word the Morris Lubricants FAQ's section from their website, I've just been reading it. Your info is correct, now to see whether there is a gearbox additive to nuetralise the effect of the phosphorus, otherwise I'll be charged with kidnapping, torture, arson, abh, gbh and probably rape before the weekend is spent!

I thought I was on to a winner with this parts guy! :kill:

miller oil do an alternative to the volvo oil and is slightly cheaper. Also rember that the volvo oil come in an exact amount so none left for any topping up that you may need in the future

Easy girl, I'm working on it. I've managed to find out that Millers is based in New Zealand but that probably doesn't help ;)

Try Lube Oil; Specialising in Lubricants, Lube Oil can be found at 4 Porters Way Birmingham, B9 5RR in the county of West Midlands. Lube Oil are available on 0121 772 6999.

Well short term put anything in you can get your hands on, long term I'd get it changed to something that is verified as bronze safe. When I spoke to Fuchs UK, the guy didn't really understand what the issue was with bronze, so I had no confidence in him (This was the product manager for Fuchs UK, not some chump on work experience).

I'd possibly speak to Comma and see what they say?
