what about picking up a retired 480 with a good engine, and swopping them out. I would love to have the time to rebuild an engine, good learning experience.

Anyone on here have links to any Renault 16v installations ?

You would be best to get a scrap engine and drop it in easy job. I have a spare turbo bottom end. loads of 2l engines about. When did the noise appear? Friend had a golf that started knocking after an oil change muppets put the wrong oil in, Replaced the oil and all was good again.

the noise started after a service, my friend who is a mechanic has looked and said the oil is very thin, Any recommendations for a good thick oil for the 2 litre?

I have always used Castrol magnatec in all my cars (admittedly mostly turbos) but seems to work well.
Sounds like the same problem as the golf the oil was far to low a rating modern cars seem to use a lot thinner oil then old cars so if it is a garage that mostly does newer stuff maybe just stuck standard oil in.

The problem is now sorted, Put some Castrol GTX 10-40 oil in and it's quiet like it used to be, well, quiet for a 480 :-)
