Urgent Request - MOT TIME!

Hey all,

It's MOT time again, and amongst other things I've got problems with my IDLE being to high at 1500rpm. I've cleaned the ICV with carb cleaner, and that made no difference. I did have a slight blow where the cat meets the midpipe (I've fixed this with gun gum, albeit just to get it through, it needs a new gasket).

So where else Can i Begin the diagnosis?

Exact symptoms are :

Idles at 1500rpm (steady) when warm.
Idles a little rough on startup (Like its trying to stall.)

MOT due in 10days so need to get some help to get it through, this is amongst all the electrical gremins I've got to deal with too :(

Thanks

Ross

I'll echo the above.

This problem is most often caused by the TPS being either poory adjusted, or just plain broken.

It should be heard to click just as you move the throttle a fraction open. If not try putting a bit of pressure the other way, if it clicks, and with the engine running the idle goes back to normal....

Undo the throttle stop screw half a turn, so the throttle closes a little more. (people wind them in trying to speed up the idle). If the throttle won't move any more, then the butterfly valve is closed, and you need to adjust the sensor.

Remove the throttle body, and clean it. Undo the two screws that hold the sensor, and turn it untill it clicks on opening the throttle, and again on closing it. This is tricky to set up, but it must be right or your car won't work properly.

If the sensor fails to click at all then it is dead, and requires replacement. It's easier to get the whole throttle body off a scrap car, after checking all is ok, as the setup is a pain.

Don't bother trying to set it up on the car, it will take 10 times as long, as you can't get to anything, and the sensor will move when you try to tighten the screws.

Well I've confirmed the click can be heard when the throttle its first on. I was thinking of putting a meter on the terminals to try guage resistance, but haven't been able to find any reference values.

I've got a throttle body on a 91 turbo, are these interchangable?

Swapped the Throttle Body + TPS over last night, and no joy, still idling high when warm @ 1500rpm. Idles badly when cold too :(

Cleaned contacts on Engine Temperature Sensor, and checked resistance as being correct.

Idle still @ 1500rpm when warm, and all over the place when cold :(

MOT due Saturday, looks like its going to be off the road for a while.....

Check my guide on testing lambda sensor.

Dead lambdas have a tendancy to affect idle speed on a 480. Very odd.

MOT Tommorrow :(

Lambda was tested as per your guide JT and was seemingly fine.

Well Good news!

Idle was a bit lumpy for the MOT test, but I told the guy it had 300 duration cams in it

Its gone through its MOT baby! (only needing a few bulbs which I should have checked, and a CV boot sorting, which Is only a few quid!)

12 more months!
