Low boost edit: problem solved...

Post by t_w » Sat Apr 05, 2008 6:57 pm

My 480 (B18FT, 1990) suffers from a low turbo boost.
I've searched the forum for different solutions, but found one that draw my attention.

It was a topic in which someone stated his boost was lower than normal. He also stated that his cat was 'rattling'.

I have exactly the same two issues...

Could someone explaine to me, how the 'rattling cat' has an influence on the turbo boost?

When the cat starts rattling it breakes up and parts of it block the exhaust restricting the flow

Yep, happened to me in my 440, stalled the engine in lane 3 of the M5

Since yours is a 1990, smash the insides outof it and stick it back on again.

The problem is, that I need a cat for the APK (Dutch for MOT)
So I'll try to empty it first. If it doesn't work, I'll buy a new one...

Well, cleared the inside of the cat this morning and the turbo boost is as it should be!

So I am one happy man! :hopping:

Yes it will, your right, however I think we were going for the cheapest and easiest option!

I have a decat pipe made from part of our old 240's exhaust, the pipe is now 26 years old!

What I don't understand here:

1- The cat was up till 1993 courtesy of Volvo and so one can pass the Dutch MOT (aka APK) without it. Officially it is non existent.
2- The cat can be replaced with a standard muffler which fits exactly in place with the same flange. It has much less restriction than the cat. And is cheaper. A lot.
There is no mounting point for the oxygen sensor though. But the ECU of these cars can do without it. If you want to keep your sensor, a mounting point is easily welded in.
Too old to bother
