Turbo Silencer

Post by owen080808 » Mon Mar 03, 2008 6:17 pm

Well perhaps everything was going too smoothly, mot this month and my rear silencer has just given up :(

I've been looking around online and been to a few local factors. Can anyone clear up for certain that the rear section of the turbo exhaust is different to the 1.7/2.0 NA engines? I'm hoping to get away with just replacing the rear silencer, but looking at how rusty the clamp is it looks as though i may have to replace the middle pipe too. Apparently the turbo system is of a larger diameter?

Any suggestions on good (cheap) suppliers? Not got the ££ for custom/stainless, just looking for a patern replacement.

Cheers guys,

Owen

Cheers, spotted those guys from your previous thread already. they win on price so far, middle pipe, rear silencer, rubber mounts and clamp delivered for £127. not too bad at all. (considering i went to viking direct in glasgow, who had all the parts but would be £160 plus fitting bits not including any postage)

The only reason i hesitate is that the guy behind the counter at GSF (who list rear silencer for 39.90+vat) said that that silencer would not fit my turbo, as it has a larger diameter exhaust. I can't be doing with getting all the bits couriered out from online auto to then get under the car and not be able to fit it. If no one has any better suggestions then i'm just going to order from them in the morning and hope for the best :?

Thanks for the suggestion smooth :)

thats what i thought. but i suppose i have no reason to believe they won't send the right bits, its just that online folks all use the same diagram, whereas gsf had 3 different ones with a different dia. clamp giving away the larger bore. ;)

Go to www.buypartsby.co.uk

I had loads of hassle years ago when I tried to mix and match from different suppleirs. And yes GSF boxe's are only for the 1.7 N/A and Europarts listings were all wrong. And buyparts listed the wrong part for my N/A engine. Their records are all up to date now though and I used them for another exhaust for a 1.7 and it was top notch.

I think this like will work... http://www.buypartsby.co.uk/exhausts_de ... ordID=3811

This is cheap! It will fit well and order by 3pm and you will have it next day (they say 2 -3 days but never had it not delivered next day from then.)

Good luck!

well ordered tuesday, arrived yesterday (despite paying extra for next day delivery) i've just been outside and hacked my rusty exhaust off, offered up the new system to the bottom of the car and its all wrong. That'll be the 1.7na exhaust they've sent me then, despite me clearly stating that i needed the turbo one

made a phonecall and i'm waiting on someone calling me back (not holding out much hope at 5pm on a friday)

i saw this coming with f***ing bells on, feel like such a twat. :( and now my car is sitting in the street with no exhaust till goodness knows when and i have to mess around again next week trying to deal with idiot couriers to get it picked up.

in summary grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

rant over

How much you hacked off? Go get a exhaust repair kit and wrap it back, Gonna blow like crazy but you have a car again.

backbox is no longer connected, the failure was where the pipe enters the backbox so not wrap-able. i've got the cat supported on some wire, i could probably re-fit my old middle section which goes as far as the rear axle, but there's not much point. the reason i was fixing it in the first place is to pass the mot this month, otherwise i would have just left the backbox blowing a little. i started it up with just downpipe and cat after the turbo and its bloody loud, i could probably drive it a short way but i don't think plod would be impressed.

pepper how far away are you? i could organise for a courier to collect from you if it was going to be worthwhile?

Reminds me of driving to kwik fit with no front bumper/lights and only a down pipe.

looked like a xmas tree with fairy lights hanging down the front but sounded like a steam train with a turbo lol.

well all sorted now, shiney new exhaust at a very good price £110.49 for the middle pipe, rear box, clamp and rubber mounts from a place called Partco, on scotland street in glasgow. thoroughly recomend them. Took less than an hour to fit myself too: pretty chuffed.

Meanwhile still waiting to get my money back from the "that is the right exhaust for your car" people at online automotvie, they assure me this is just down to problems with their courier (citylink - no suprises there then  )but its a bit annoying to be out of pocket in the mean time.

Now if only the car would start she'd be ready for another mot, but thats another story...
