Standard 95 ron petrol - is it ok?

Post by Stuntman » Mon Aug 20, 2007 7:33 pm

Hello everyone, I was flicking through the owners manual and discovered that my gf's car should be run on 96 and above, is it detrimental to run on lower or should we go the premium unleaded route, or even just use an octane booster

Thanks in advance Andi K

Basically yes. If you want your engine to last as long as possible Shell's V power all the way! If you drive hard it'll work out more economical also.

I did a track day last year using 95 and in 3 hours i used an entire tank, i ran another one a few weeks ago and only used just over half the tank!

And lets face it, 480's have enough "quirks", it's not worth causing another one just for the sake of a few pence per litre! ;)

Mine says '95 ron only' on a plate inside the filler flap?
Guess it depends on which engine you have. Mines a B18FT.

Ignore it. I *think* that this was because when the cars were produced (late 80's), 95 ron was the only unleaded petrol sold and the sign was placed there to stop people putting leaded fuel in it. But i may have just made that up entirely!

standard turbo - ron 95
rich mod/mbc/more power - 97+

Remember it's ron 95 in a standard 480 turbo for a good reason..... your standard and your saving money being standard because you just 'drive' your 480.

Since our cars have a knock sensor, there will be some benifit from using higher octane fuel. Even with a standard car. Also using 92 octane fuel, won't kill the engine, but will hurt performance.

Anything above 97 is overkill for a standard car.
