ecu colours
I've searched and searched but can't find a thread that details all the different colour variants of the different ecus.
Can someone please point me at it, or give me a quick summary?
I have a '94 turbo (not sure yet what colour the boost ecu is) and a 91 turbo auto for spares. This has an orange ecu.
I want to get one of them Richmodded and use the other while this is bring done. Which would be best to get chipped and would the orange work in a '94 car?
I can use the MAF from the 91 car if necessary, I guess.
Any advice gratefully received.
Antony

Hey Tony!
An orange ECU doesnt work in your car, well not very well!!
You timing/boost ECU is blue. This was the last one fitted.
These are much more refined and are definately the ones to get modded by Rich...
A blue ECU,by the way, works in all 480Ts.Maaaan,does it improve some too!
Steve
ps Auto ones work fine in Manual cars too, just in case one comes up for ya!

Yep,as far as I know he is....
I seem to remember Martin Holmes trying to run an orange ECU in the black Turbo when he didnt have a blue one.
The thing would hardly even start.....
I really dont think it works mate.

an orange ecu will work, the loom just needs an extra live n earth, thought rich would have sorted this problem by now lol

The problem is trying to explain this to non technical people. That and having tried mix and match ECUs in a real car.... It doesn't work properly without re-mapping the ignition ECU to suit the load output from the injection ECU.haz@nocturnal_development wrote:an orange ecu will work, the loom just needs an extra live n earth, thought rich would have sorted this problem by now lol
Even then there may be some issues as the ECUs are made to work together as a pair, and mismatched pairs may do funny things. Things such as noise getting into the signals, or sensor wires. Anything could happen, it may be ok on one car, and not on another.
It is possible that it could cause engine damage, particularly if you start fitting a modified ECU of the wrong type. It's not somenting I could reccomend, or that I think is a good idea. Maybe if it becomes impossible to obtain spare ECUs of the right type, then there will be no choice, I'll revist the subject at that point (if needed).
For a quick conclusion....
It is best to stick to a matched pair of ECUs, it's likely to result in less stress all round.

OK, to update this thread. I removed the ecu in my '94 turbo to find it has a blue label. In the absence of another, spare blue label ecu and an increasing desire to send mine off for a Richmod, I plugged in the spare orange ecu I had, to see what would happen.
The car seems to run perfectly! If anything it could be a little smoother than before. I have turned down the MBC just in case, but my 25 mile commute this morning passed without incident.
So, I guess I can send my blue label off to Rich for some tweak-age.
If only I hadn't left my cheque book at home...

Just one question: Do you have to disconnect the battery before you unplug any of the computers? I want to unplug the one that controls the lights and stuff and clean the contacts because it does strange things like turning on the interior light after you have left the car for 30 minutes and the wiper delay only works occasionally etc. I don't want to damage it by doing the wrong thing.

Unplug the battery for a good length of time, say at least 30mins.
Re-attach it, start the car, put on all the electrical devices, heated screen, lights etc for a minute or so. Go for a long drive with as many different road conditions as possible.
On my old 306, it was also recommended to have the ignition on for 30secs before starting it.
