Leaking cylinder head

Post by Keyz » Mon Dec 02, 2024 9:56 pm

1.7l B18E engine is knocking, with erratic idle, white/grey smoke from the exhaust, coolant level drop in coolant expansion tank...
All signs of a bad head gasket. I've found coolant leak from behind the engine (firewall side).
I hope engine's head is not warped, or cracked, and that's just headgasket failure or bolts not tightened enough...

The problem if it IS the head, is that you're not supposed to reface them.

Have you done a compression or leakdown test?

No compression test, I've managed to begin to unbolt the engine head today.
Only the camshaft pulley's bolt to unscrew, and the head is out...

I've finally found where does the leak comes from... It comes from a rusted frost plug! The engine is  vomiting coolant...
I'm looking after a new set of these little frost plugs.
This engine is known for frozen plugs issue...

:tomato:

And here's the rusted frost plug under exhaust manifold, the three other frost plugs aren't leaking, but it's a common issue on F2N or F3N engines...:

The same happened to the 2.0 litres f3n engine.
White smoke at exhaust, like a collant leak at headgasket, this was a 15mm rusted frost plug, behind the exhaust :badmood: manifold...

I measured 15mm, but it was rather 1mm more. It's a 16mm core plug behind the exhaust manifold.
I'm waiting the second command to fit this 16mm core plug, and rebolt the engine headblock.

Does anyone has the torque specs for engine head screws?
Is there an angular tightening?

Talk to jifflemon about torquing the head bolts. There is a lot of wrong information out there and he's got to the bottom of how to do it correctly.
