Provided that it is oil residue from oil mist and not sludge, I would not be worried.

Hi, yeh it's not sludge, just a sticky black coating, you cant tell it's there until you touch it. So not a problem you think??

I dont think so - it's fairly normal to find a light coat of oil in the intercooler on turbo cars, so unless its either pouring out, or really sludgy, I would not worry. Consider that the crankcase ventilation system vents into the turbo under boost.

Yeh, makes sense thanks. It's just when my friend said they could smell burning oil it's got me worried and I'd like to find out what that is.

When my 2.0ES and Turbo get a seriously hard thrashing, there is a burning smell from somewhere - I presume it's things getting hotter than intended...

Thanks. But they weren't in my car they were behind in their car. I don't smell anything from inside the car.

my tuppence would suggest that if no clouds of blue smole as on/off throttle then your turbo isn't passing oil through the seals.
a wee thin film of oil is 'normal' as the oil breather system is never going to pull out ALL the entrained oil from eth crankcase, as teh rings wear then more oil will blow-past.
if REALLY cooking it like hammering a round a track then best to leave bonnet open so the hot oil doesn't light up (a guy was thrashing the t% around Alford a few weeks back, wheel spinning on auto test etc and when came back to paddock, there was a 'blue haze'
