Re: Ah

The Paris Blue 480 which my dad is currently driving has very poor rear wheel arches and virtually nonexistent rear bumper support. However the right rear light cluster is as good as new, the left one needs polishing but is good otherwise, and the front blinkers are in similar condition and so are t...

Re: 2.0L Turbo Anyone?

Sorry for my direct Dutch approach :P I could have said it was quite an interesting idea and trying it in your car would get you somewhere eventually, but that would have made me sound too British, wouldn't it?

Re: 2.0L Turbo Anyone?

Be prepared for an engine that will tear the gearbox and chassis apart, if it hasn't already spit out its internals through the sump. That is, if the head hasn't been blown off because of severe cooling issues. The seller doesn't know sh*t about engines, as the F3P is a 1.8 litre engine (1.7 = F3N, ...

Re: Oil on speed sensor

The ECU has NOTHING to do with intermittent failures of the speedometer. Only the 2 litre engine has a feed from the speedometer to the ECU, to signal the ECU that the car is driving, but without this feed the car runs just fine and so does the speedometer. If the engine cuts out when driving to a j...

Re: Oil on speed sensor

I have been having intermittent problems with my speed sensor (not the dashboard, rather the feed to the ECU). What do you mean by feed to the ECU? There is an output to the ECU (which is also used for cruise control) but the speedometer-ECU connection is almost never at fault (I have never seen it...

Re: Oil on speed sensor

I would start worrying if there were NO traces of oil on the sensor, because it functions by measuring the proximity of gear teeth inside the geabox, which should be filled with gearbox oil! The sensor is nothing more than a coil, both ends of the coil are connected to the speedometer, which forms a...

Re: Blinky 51/480

I could lay my hands on a new Nissens radiator a while ago and it fits perfectly. Remember there are two kinds of radiators in the Volvo 480, one for the non-airconditioned non-turbo cars, and one for the cars with airconditioning and/or turbo engine. Non-turbo, no a/c: 367 mm, Volvo p/n 9031162 htt...

You live around York? I was driving around in North Yorkshire a couple of weeks ago, and decoded the secret signage to the best driving roads. If the sign says "Unsuitable for caravans" you're bound to have lots of fun  (though driving in almost 16 feet of Volvo with the steering wheel on the w...

Do they have cold winters in the UK? I thought your only type of weather was rainfall :P

(not that it is much better at the other end of the North Sea, today we are experiencing the first summer day in 5 weeks, it will be 27 degrees)

Re: Which relay goes here? (picture)

If there's no relay in there an all things electrical are functioning in the car, I wouldn't worry about it.
I haven't checked the diagrams but as fas as I know, several features were deleted in model year 1989 (starting August 1988) and this could very well be one of them.

(they didn't cut cost on the car's production only, also on the production of the introductory video  )

Re: eBay lovely looking cheap ES at Volvo dealer.

SWMBO has talked me out of my latest purchase as well; she had a pretty good argument as having three 480's (if I include the one my dad is driving in) means the other two get less attention, and it doesn't make sense to have two identical cars trying to maintain in good condition whilst having litt...

Re: 480 addiction

Well, sad but not really sad news. I made a calculation of all the cost (over €1000 in parts and labour already) and time needed to fix this car. Both rear windows and the side marker seals are leaking, the exhaust is almost gone, brake lines are rusty, the dreaded hydraulic gearbox support has give...

Do a kit and replace the water pump and the alternator belts as well; it will set you back maybe 50 pounds extra but it will save you a lot of trouble in the future.

480 addiction

Being a 480 addict, you have to accept two things. One thing is pouring humongous amounts of money into the cars while getting no returns on your investment financially. A hobby like this is not a sensible thing. (If you want a sensible car, buy a Toyota and be the one in front of the queue on A-roa...
