Another pos. could be the headlight adjustment. Works with pressurised glycol filled tubing. Crap system, very delicate because of leaks and impossible to refill. No new spairparts available. Never seen one in working order.

You can use a big enough glass plate, grease the surface of the head very thinly with engine oil or whatever available. Put the glassplate carefully on the head and you can see if there's a perfect print on the glass or not...

As far as I know #5 is not wired up in any of the 400 serie's. Check the socket to verify, you can see if there's a copper contact in the socket. http://www.am.torun.pl/~ja/volvo/diagnostic-system.shtml edit, I was wrong!: I found a German manual which states that socket#5 is the CEM III diagnose. I...

Most likely cause is a broken wire where the wiring goes from the top of the roof to the rearwindow. Sometimes difficult to spot there. Those wiring harnasses are still available from the dealer for something like 25ish. It's volvopart#3449998. This is the compleet loom for rearwiper, rearheater and...

Check the connection on the oiltemp.sensor. It's located under the leftside of the oilfilter, has a yellow wire.

I heard this story too about fully synthetic. I doubt that it will damage seals. Pre 80 cars used different materials such as natural rubber for the seals. Those can be affected (swelling)by fully synthetic oils. But not our 480's, in these they used the modern, synthetic compound rubbers. Synthetic...

Synthetic or semisynthetic oil will clean the internals of your engine perfectly. My first 480 oil change was with Castrol magnatec 10/40 + filter, drove it for about 500mls, and replaced it. Kind off black sludge came out! Now after the second Castrol + filter change and 2000mls it still looks tran...

Be very carefull with polishing, only needed if the lacquer is really weathered. Every time you polish you take away a small layer of the lacquer. Waxing twice a year, polishing only when waxing isn't enough. Better try a clay bar first if waxing doesn't do the trick.

Behind this nylon lager, as Volvo calls it, there's just the hole in which the circliped lager is fitted. So no oilseal around/behind it. This is the part of the selector linkage that goes straight up in to the box, but there is no oily residue in this specific area under the box, even though it is ...

Do a search on richmod, and take a look at the tuning and tweaking. There's been a lot of info on this subject already, this thread for example:
