Re: Extreme Speedo Rescue

I think that's probably what I'll try next, unfortunately that's a workshop job so will have to wait until next weekend. Additionally, I have no idea what the output from a healthy speed sensor would look like so I don't have a 'control' to compare it to, so will have to rely on my ability to judge ...

Re: Extreme Speedo Rescue

I carried on my investigations this morning - first thing was to check the sensor connector in the engine bay. In a car of this vintage (1988) it's down here: https://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a254/The_Computer_Moose/Cars/SVC/Speedo%20Repair/1_zpsr3cdig2p.jpg and looks like this: https://i13.photob...

Re: Extreme Speedo Rescue

Good work and a tidy repair 👍 Many thanks, hopefully it will all work in the end! My only idea: could it be that one of the speedo wires has broken insulation and it is grounded somewhere accidentally? That's certainly something I'm considering. Depending on what happens when I try feeding a signal...

Re: Turbo on eBay

That's annoying, two turbos come up for sale on my doorstep in about as many months and they're both knackered. Will keep an eye on it out of interest though as I drive past that yard fairly regularly, and it's just round the corner from where I do most of my maintenance. The Oxford main dealer in t...

Extreme Speedo Rescue

This is something between a blog post, a how-to, and a question thread, so the electrical forum felt like the right place for it. My grey ES was supposed to be restoration project to give me something to fix when I'm not already fixing the green GT, but the other half has been using it to commute in...

Re: Oil on speed sensor

yep both speedo have broken plastic gear wheels :-( one has two teeth missing, one has a tooth 'folded over' so I guess two gear wheels needed :( Was about to suggest that! Presumably you've already found the part you need, they were available on eBay last time I checked. Probably wouldn't have hel...

Re: 460 turbo dash lights

That looks fantastic! I've had SuperBrightLEDs in my bookmarks for a while as one of the few websites advertising B10d bulbs, but I've never ordered anything from them, partly due to shipping hassle and mainly because I suspected that the front-facing LED chip would be too directional to allow the l...

Re: Highest Mileage Car Currently on UK Roads?

Not my car, but the latest 480 at Lake's had 196,681 on the clock, and looked like it was doing well until it unfortunately hit something. That Celeb has been up for sale for a while, perhaps the high mileage has been putting people off? The rear clusters look fairly bad but hopefully that won't be ...

Re: Wanted - under bonnet rubber seals & other things

the 480 in lakes had a set of gauges I think - James can probably confirm! It did indeed - if they didn't make it into your boot then I've probably got them. Haven't been through my bits yet but will check in due course. I believe you had first dibs on them but if you're offering them to David then...

Re: 26th October Mini Meet Lincolnshire Wolds

The whole car has been off the road for a while (coolant leak, now fixed with a new pump) and I've been daily driving it this week to bring any niggles to the surface, which turned out to be the near-side pop-up not working and the info centre being completely dead. I can do without them for driving...

The GT and I are having a slight disagreement:

Fortunately I had a feeling this would happen so I preemptively took the day off. Not sure which car I'll be in tomorrow but I'll get there one way or another!

Re: 1988 Volvo 480 ES - A New Era Dawns

Thanks for posting that picture - I was basing my understanding of how the motor works internally on ancient text-only posts dug up by the forum search, so that makes things much clearer! When I was referring to 'switches' I meant the interrupting mechanism that gives top and bottom position. Someon...

Re: Plastic Clips for Door Card

I can't confirm with absolute certainty, but I'd wager that if anyone here has a '95 car with no clips along the bottom then it had them when it was new but they've fallen off in the meantime, probably when the door card was removed in the past.

Re: Plastic Clips for Door Card

are you sure they are missing?, assuming that those being requested are those along bottom edge of the door?? I just discovered that mine were NOT missing as the later doors are held on with 'hidden' clips that might have 'disbonded' from the pressed chip-board inner . .. . . My '94 car has both th...

Re: 1988 Volvo 480 ES - A New Era Dawns

That description also sounds like symptoms of a position switch not working (the switch at the bottom of the rotation being jammed, thus interrupting the power lines), and would go some way to explaining why it will go down and not up. Regardless of the direction, the relay is simply closing and ope...
