Re: Battery drain
Get a cheap multimeter, for instance http://www.halfords.com/workshop-tools/tools/hand-tools/rolson-digital-multimeter http://www.diy.com/departments/0-600v-pocket-digital-multimeter/541251_BQ.prd etcetera. Will set you back around a tenner and it's a very handy tool anyway. These cheap ones might n...

Re: Battery drain
Couldn't agree more with what arthuy is saying :D What do you measure with a digital voltmeter across the battery terminals? With engine running and without? Do you see a very fast drop in voltage? Together with the winter temperatures, it could indeed well be that your battery is on its way to batt...

Re: Battery drain
Start with looking at the interior light in the glove box, sometimes the light doesn't switch off due to a faulty switch. Then check the interior lights if you have closed the doors and locked the car. Look at the dashboard, is the "door open" warning light still on? Disconnect the radio. Especially...

Re: Broken front clusters wanted?
You should try and contact Joep Vrijling in Helmond, The Netherlands. I will give his contact details through PM. Joep owns a 1995 480 ES from new with over 500,000 kms driven already, so he is keen to keep the spare parts bin filled. He also refurbishes window regulators.

Re: Broken front clusters wanted?
Two ways to make them look better 1. polishing them with the same stuff to make polycarbonate headlights clear again. My wife's previous Focus had headlights that have become opaque and they managed to make them look as new again. Afterwards you should treat the plastic with something to make it UV-...

Re: Volvo 480S - Very Low Mileage & Well Sorted
Meanwhile, you can sort out the optical issues, which makes your car even more attractive when selling it in springtime. New windscreen is available even in the UK, new DRL lenses (not the entire unit, just the part in front of the DRL/parking light) are being re-made for € 75 a pair. Last but not l...

Re: Smoke in the speedo
The other day I changed my speedo because the cogwheels were broken and when taking a ride to test it, smoke came out of the back of the speedometer and the green circuit of it burned just above where the cogwheels sits, and I thinks also the blue connector smokes and because of that I had to chang...

Re: My Volvo 480 is now a Volvo 480.000!!
In the meantime the fuel pump died, I had many problems to find a suitable one here, in Spain there are not many cars like this.. In Germany and in The Netherlands these parts are available new, you might try the Volvo aftermarket part suppliers on the Internet (Skandix, Polar Parts, etc) Add your ...

Re: Volvo 480S - Very Low Mileage & Well Sorted
Sad that you have to part from this car Martin, now you've put so much effort in it to get it on the road! Sadder even that there are so few of these cars left in the UK, while it has been the best selling country for the 480.
Good luck finding a new home for this car!!!

Re: Manual Gearbox Oil Change - Ins and Outs
The Renault JB/JC gearboxes have a tendency to leak through the gear selector shaft (underside of the gearbox) There are repair kits available: http://www.skandix.de/en/spare-parts/drive-train/transmission/manual-transmission/gaskets-seals/radial-seal-shift-linkage/1047048/ However, I have read mixe...

Re: Fuelsystemcleaning nightmare
When was the last time your fuel filter has been changed? It is pretty hard to reach and even harder to remove as it becomes stuck after years of use, so many times it is "forgotten" during regular maintenance. Also, how do your distributor and rotor look like? Not firing of cilinders and a smell of...

Re: Starter Motor Replacement - how complex?
Starter motors are one of the easiest parts of the 480 to come by, since they are the same on millions of Renaults. I wouldn't go for second hand. Cheap on fleabay: http://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/Volvo-480-E-Starter-Motors/174025/bn_1274746/i.html If you have a Turbo it is quite an operation to get to th...

Re: What is this cable/wire for?
Doesn't look like something that came from the Volvo factory. The connectors are different. Could be from an accessory (alarm?) that has already been removed. I would not worry about it.

Re: Heater blower
There are two versions of the heater blower switch. One that has a "0" setting (i.e. blower off) and four speeds, and one that has only four speeds and no "0". The reason your car doesn't have a blower with a "0" position, is that your car is equipped with air conditioning. There needs to be a conti...

Re: Instrument cluster/speedometer repairs
It is easier to use the spare cluster while the current one is away for repairs. It is a pretty difficult job to reset the mileage, takes hours of fiddling and sometimes the result isn't satisfactory. Actually setting mileage is easier than I thought. Once the speedometer has been dismantled, you c...

Re: Several electrical systems stopped working
All evidence points to a faulty CEM. You could try and check the fuses first (all of them!). If they are all OK, take the CEM out (left hand side of the interior, see the FAQ on this web site) and open the box. Sometimes it helps by just cleaning everything including the contacts. The early CEMs are...
