Re: Volvo 480 Bus company
I really rather like the stripes on the side of the green GT. Why didn't I think of having Snazzy's replacement subframe powder coated in electric blue instead of picking boring grey ? O, maybe something to do with the fact I never look under cars  PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE let them all find a good...

Re: Passenger side door pocket, rear speaker housings, load cover and ‘Venetian blind’
Thanks for identifying some of those James! Interesting what you say about the arm-rest - I find it no problem at all, but then you are considerably taller than I am, so maybe since I imagine you have the seat further back that's why it gets in your way? In the 440 I have the fold down armrest and t...

Re: Passenger side door pocket, rear speaker housings, load cover and ‘Venetian blind’
Was just thinking the other night how I would like a Venetian blind in my car, along with a boot cover that works Don't go there - I know it's very appealing in terms of collecting up as many accessories and options as possible (that's what I do!) but in this instance my advice is to read what aida...

Re: A Sorry Looking Celebration (Given a Lifeline!)
Excellent news all round - well done and thank you to Sylvia, Al and Jeff for all your efforts with this new "club rescue" scheme :D Parking R1 and turning to R2 sounds a sensible approach in the circumstances. What are the plans for R" once she has an MOT, V5, and has enjoyed Jeff's tender loving c...

Re: B20F rough running....ish
I'd be tempted to say the rear wiper ones are more likely to be a break in the wiring hatch loom. I totally agree with you on the rear wiper - check the loom first, Dekk, they usually break up. Lots on here about that... You talk about the CEM and then mention starting - sorry if this is obvious, b...

Re: B20F rough running....ish
OK, I had half an hour this afternoon so I've had a quick look at the codes. As mentioned a slightly clunky system, but it works and I quite like morse code  I could do with clearing the codes and trying to drive it, then testing again as I haven't got a clue how long it may have been since it...

Re: B20F rough running....ish
My best bet would be the oxygen sensor (lambda sond), a faulty sensor usually gives bad performance around 2000-3000 rpm. But that should be recorded in the fault codes. Robert, I think you read my mind! Just resolved a running problem in the "new" 440 and the example code I chose was that which ha...

Re: 1988 Volvo 480 ES - A New Era Dawns: One year on
Thanks David, I was unaware of your profession and I am very grateful of the advice. It would be similar to our 1943 Jeep not having seatbelts but being entirely legal, as it was never fitted with them. I certainly feel that Numberplates set off the look of a car, as such choosing a period correct ...

Re: 1988 Volvo 480 ES - A New Era Dawns: One year on
As you say, Ben, there are lots of illegal plates out there so it is a question of whether you want to chance it. I have checked the authorities - https://assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/878990/vehicle-registration-numbers-and-number-plates-inf...

Re: 1988 Volvo 480 ES - A New Era Dawns: One year on
Put simply, any number plate that does not follow the set font and spacing (and I'd need to check up what these are) is not road legal. So that mock-up certainly isn't - sorry. Reasons are that the sight test criteria for driving is based on an ability to read a standard number plate, and police/Hig...

Re: Rescue Car: R1
Always frightens me when I hear about people whacking the dash-top  It's not how things should be, of course, but sometimes people don't seem to allow for how alarmingly fragile certain areas of our cars actually are... Good luck with repairing that! Sorry, don't have a spare of that part of th...

The grey Celebration not being broken is in Redcar - not a million miles. Might go and have a look...have to see how I feel

Re: B20F rough running....ish
Right - first stop now is definitely to check the codes. On the N/S strut pillar under the bonnet you'll see a small black box. That's the diagnostic code reader - it works with a little flashing light which translate to error codes. There is plenty on here and the main site about the system and how...

Re: All aboard the gravy train....
The latest was a nice looking F reg ES at Mathewsons on the 22nd. I don’t know what it fetched though. Norm https://mathewsons.co.uk/auctions/auction-dates/vehicles/14634-1989-volvo-480-es-auto Didn't sell, looked fairly straight though... I go out that way every so often - that's the second early ...

Re: Rescue Car: R1
Yep, no rear speakers in the early cars - hence Volvo produced the ones that replaced the rear cubby boxes as there was no existing side-panel cut-out. I think you'll find the wiring is already there and just stops... Will drop relay into post for you, no problem. Agree with you re the rear arch st...

Re: What period aftermarket radio/casette to use?
Ahhh...brilliant! I didn't notice that when we were fitting it, but then again it was dark as I recall and we were working by the light of a streetlamp  Yes, I remember it being a good unit, and as you say it will go well in any car of that period but particularly any VW/Audi since they were th...
