480 S spotted in Luton (L887 LRB)

Spotted this white S model on Sunday, January 22nd, 2023 somewhere near Luton airport. I was in my wife's Mini and thought I'd speed up to take a closer look after it overtook me but stood no chance as the Mini's lights are terrifyingly dim at night and the 480 was being driven rather fast! I'd say ...

Re: The Bean Counter theory

A question regarding the phasing out of "overtaking wipers" My '91 ES had this from factory, which i believe takes the signal to switch to constant from the oem throttle position sensor reading 100% and telling the CEM *bonkers* but anwyay, because I'm a heathen and use standalone management on my ...

Re: Recommissioning a 480: 9. Final Bits

Hey Dave, I had a bit of trouble with my own car today and ended up taking out the engine coolant temperature sensor and boiling it in a pan of water and did indeed start at around 290 Ohms and increase with temperature. I have ran with a later sensor installed and it doesn't run right-- you loose t...

Re: 1987 480 ES Project -- D-reg, 2nd oldest in UK

Hi James - Just discovered this thread, and not had time to read it all! Great job you've done there, it looks stunning in bright red. I would have preferred a brighter colour than grey on my car, but beggars can't be choosers. Thanks for all your advice earlier in the year regarding my car. Unfort...

Didn’t really want to take this out for its first trip in snow, slush and salt but was also very happy to dig it out and use it as it was intended early this morning.

I could transport a set from the UK to Singapore if that would significantly save you postage?

Hello Alex, Keith Copper sells these on eBay. He is down on the south coast of the UK. I see you are in NZ but are probably used to getting hit hard with post. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/204132919577?mkcid=16&mkevt=1&mkrid=711-127632-2357-0&ssspo=KHiW-x3OQYK&sssrc=2349624&ssuid=gH7mjGGLTSK&var=&widg...

Re: WANTED: Mudflaps (front and/or rear)

Fronts you might get from a scrapper. Rears less likely to exist as they often get ripped off if reversed to a kerb.

Re: Parts needed urgently

Thanks for the rear brake caliper lead. That's proving tough to order I had mine refurbished by these guys in 2018. Callipers still looking good to this day. I think Rachel used them also. https://www.bcs-automotive.co.uk/ The price was £216 for all four callipers to be refurbished and painted in t...

They relay is not round, it’s big, tall, square and even says something like pop-up on the top!

Re: Pop up lights problem

Lights not on as well as popups not working could be the relay. It's the tall black one in the box in the scuttle. If you're in the UK, Terry Stone Volvo usually has them. Otherwise malkontent on here or Ria Gerritse on the fb group are both EU. This linking of the problem of lights being off and t...

Re: Pop up lights problem

Hello and welcome aboard! I don’t quite follow you as you say the motors work but the lights don’t move? Anyway, if the system is complete often they just need a good exercise to bring them back to life— this cleans the contacts inside, and that of the pop-up relay. N.B. the pop-ups are assisted by ...

I’m pretty sure I got new pins from the Volvo dealer a few years ago as the pin is used on many other Volvos.
Found these in the garage, part number 3416207 and ordered within the last few years.

Re: engine mounts on their way out?

Oh dear! Pretty much the only one that fails is actually the gearbox mount on the later cars. Although, mine did exit hibernation with a ripped front engine mount but I have no idea how this could have happened— maybe it was jacked wrong? The later cars have a more refined but weaker design of gearb...

Re: Coolant still running low but no leaks?

Could it be your leaky hose clip allowed coolant out but also air to be sucked in to the coolant system when it’s level was low? How about you top it up and check it out after a bit of bleeding and driving? If you are lucky it may just have needed that little bit of air bled out and all will be well...

Norm, what happened? I’m shocked as to why this would end up like this. Do you realise that members have contributed time, not inconsiderable money and parts to the rescue cars? Yes you bought it, but there was always a bit of gentlemanly agreement that you got help with it and were a bit of a custo...

Re: The joys of 480 ownership

A few weeks ago the coolant fan got stuck on so I disconnected it, I told them not to keep it on for too long because of this, so I guess they didn't bother You couldn’t have turned up screaming “this is an old banger” any louder. No wonder they did all they could to get it off the road. No cooling...
