Re: Pop up lights problem
One other thing to check - if you see 12V on the low current side of the pop-up relay but nothing happens then open it up and check the joints connecting the horizontal and vertical boards as per the picture below: https://i.imgur.com/OXZ0Km1.jpg If you've got a soldering iron it wouldn't hurt to re...

Re: Pop up lights problem
Sounds like the switch is the next thing to look at as per Jeff's suggestion above - I've got a switch somewhere that will turn the bulbs on fine on my GT but won't raise the pop-ups, so there's a precedent. Even if the switch is completely fubar'd finding a replacement won't be difficult on here! T...

Radios - Troubleshooting and Repair
This is more of a blog post than a structured how-to manual, but nonetheless I hope that you will find it interesting, and with luck it might serve as a helpful staring point for others with radio problems in the future. A few weeks ago DCWalker handed me a cardboard box containing a radio that he c...

Re: engine mounts on their way out?
The Volvo part number is 3466003, although good luck finding one! Skandix sell their own 'interpretation' of it under part no. 1079786, and I have no doubt that Jeff will be along in due course to explain the interesting backstory of it (don't buy anything yet). Changing it may or may not be possibl...

Re: Rescue Car: R3
Very disappointed to hear of this development. Having been involved with the early stages of rescuing this car and contributing parts and time to its restoration I really hoped it would end up going somewhere where it would be looked after. Anyone who’s owned a 480 for any length of time will openly...

Re: dashboard cable broken
That's one option, although I'd just remove both the blue plug on the paper cable and the blue socket on the speedo and replace them with nice modern JST connectors and a ribbon cable. Costs pennies and it'll last forever. Having said that I think it's rare that the cables themselves break, it's alm...

Re: 7th May Northants - Derbyshire Mini Meet
I shall do my best to join in for breakfast and then unfortunately I'll have to head off - not sure what I'll be driving but I'm afraid it won't be a 480 this time, more on that another time and in another thread!

Re: Some electrical problems
Start here for your dash problems: https://www.volvo-480-europe.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=24&t=35684 Sounds like a combination of dry joints and blown bulbs. We might need some more information for the other problems - thinking out loud the only electrical difference raising the bonnet would make wo...

Re: Dendy's 480 Diary
Many thanks for the encouraging words chaps - I've been making progress when time allows and I think I'm nearly there. I've got limited workshop access at the moment so most of this is happening on the front drive in the middle of Oxford - I generally try to keep car activities here to a minimum as ...

Re: Dendy's 480 Diary
Here's a breakdown of the issues when I picked the car up: Electrical - Both windows not working - Driver's mirror not moving - Hazards not working (indicators do however) - Central locking not working (constant clicking from passenger door) - Spotlights on whenever the battery is connected - Air co...

Re: Dendy's 480 Diary
Hello everyone, long time no post! Long story short, I picked up the green car today after dropping it off for an MOT and a bit of bodywork last January. Suffice it to say that things ended up taking a little longer than expected. Here it is back in Oxford for the first time in a while: https://i.im...

Don't worry, I've got enough bits here to build another few cars from scratch but no scales big enough to fit that lot on!

Re: May 23rd Virtual Mini Meet
Morning all, long time no posting from me! The GT has been away having its quarter-century service for some months and is likely to be away for several more at this rate so in the meantime I've been trying to make some progress with the rest of the fleet. I'll be dipping in and out today as time all...

Re: Extreme Speedo Rescue
I believe that in order for that sensor to work properly you should have some voltage on his leads. With the function generator you are applying a signal with is own power supply. In order for the car sensor "make" a signal it has to have a voltage feed to create the sinus wave. That voltage is sup...

Re: Extreme Speedo Rescue
There is NO output from the sensor, as it only has TWO wires, it is only changing the inductance?? as the gear wheel moves past it it is 'dumb' from my understanding of Robert (Brinkies) comments about fixing speedos . .. three wires are a different kettle of fish :D That's my understanding of it a...
