Re: My second 480...... project 'sleeper'

Actually started taking the saab apart this evening, a momentous occasion indeed. http://i1043.photobucket.com/albums/b432/asummerfield222/IMG_1514_zpsahxpuclm.jpg http://i1043.photobucket.com/albums/b432/asummerfield222/IMG_1512_zpsesvepncy.jpg http://i1043.photobucket.com/albums/b432/asummerfield2...

http://i1043.photobucket.com/albums/b432/asummerfield222/images_zpsnxrb7qw3.png Here's a diagram of a standard 4 pin relay. Notice that pins 85 and 86 (the parallel opposites) are the trigger, the low current to activate the solenoid which closes the high current switch, pins 30 and 87. On the fuel...

Like so- http://i1043.photobucket.com/albums/b432/asummerfield222/IMG_1511_zpsfadzhty6.jpg I never knew of these, I've only ever seen the type mounted in the panel like I got for my blue one a while back from a breaker, I think these are quite cool and would allow a fully OE 6 speaker setup, I'd hav...

Re: Oil in clutch???

You must have a hell of an oil leak  My cam seals, crank seal etc. etc. were all leaking once upon a time and yet no oil ever actually got onto the drive plate. down the back of the flywheel on the side of the block, yeah, but it always found its way harmlessly out the bottom of the bell hous...

Re: Volvo specialist

Give it a good service, check valve clearances (my turbo engine is much quieter now V.C.'s have been done, not that it was that bad anyway) and maybe stick some injector cleaner through it then see where you are. I've only ever had a turbo and driven a couple of 2.0's so can't speak for the NA 1.7 b...

Re: My second 480...... project 'sleeper'

Had some delays in taking the engine out of the Saab so not quite ready to begin the real job yet but I have managed to get hold of a humungous BorgWarner turbo to go on it at some point :D Also got some nice stainless tube in readiness for fabbing an exhaust when the time comes. Black 480's been go...

Re: Cambelt Questions

You're gonna need a bigger breaker bar if you want to play with a 480 that hasn't been apart for years  If you can't get the angle, use a couple of long extensions to bring the breaker bar out past the wheel arch, that's how I did it the first time years ago before the days of owning an impact ...

Re: The Wolf roams

Have you replaced the relay exactly like for like? When my fuel pump relay went some time ago I was very dismayed to find that some of the relays in our 480's have a different terminal layout to almost every other standard relay currently available, although physically they are the same and will plu...

Re: stalling and rough idle after start up?

Injector seals aren't difficult to do, once you remove the top part of the inlet manifold you should see the fuel rail. Couple of brackets hold it in place, once these are off it should just pull out. The injector bores are 14mm, seals are fairly standardised, I used some from work designed for tota...

Dash rattle fix that really worked

So after much repairing and bodging of broken fixings on the dash surround and fascia panel, I saw a significant improvement in really bad rattles but there was still the seemingly unstoppable 'buzzing' rattle that I've come across in all but one of the 480's I've ever been in, including both of my ...

Re: My second 480...... project 'sleeper'

Yeah, I checked the voltage at the terminal on the alternator (incidentally, the older cars don't have the mega fuse in the charging circuit if that's what you were thinking of), checked it was grounding properly (had to add an earth strap to an alternator -terminal once because the body wasn't eart...

Re: Anyone know what this bit of rubber is ?

I wouldn't panic too much, in all my 480 exploits over the past few years there's not much of a 480 that I haven't had to bits and it doesn't look like anything I've ever come across, could be foreign. Can't imagine where something like that would live on the 480.... What sort of shore rating would ...

Re: stalling and rough idle after start up?

If you're looking for a 'comes and goes' air leak, don't rule out injector seals. Mine were in a bad way when I rebuilt my head, the car had always had a shitty idle and would sometimes conk completely under certain conditions (like the first minute or two after a hot start when left to heat soak fo...

Re: My second 480...... project 'sleeper'

So I was gonna start having a look at stripping the Saab down tomorrow night and Saturday, but then, this afternoon, disaster :badmood: Ok, maybe disaster is slightly too strong a word, maybe 'pain in the arse setback' would be more appropriate... The bloody alternator's packed up on the 480 :( Driv...

Re: ECU Modification

Yeah, that's not what I was on about! Could be dangerous if you were overzealous with the boost control without taking lots of extra precautions to prevent it knocking itself to bits, like the stuff mentioned. I might be tempted to have some fun with that mod and a big turbo if I had a spare engine ...

Re: So, today was the day...

Jim's right, that's unreal! You lucky sod! You wanna see the state of some of these, not pretty. I once had one that had literally no good metal left on it anywhere and every time I shook it or knocked it, more gigantic pieces of rust would fall off :( Do everything you can to preserve that thing.

Re: My second 480...... project 'sleeper'

If you're desperate for a modded ECU there is a company in Coventry that can change the eproms in the jetronic and EZK to a similar spec to the robou/richmod but I think they want about £350 if I remember right. I wasn't prepared to spend this, plus, you must know what I'm like by now, I like to be ...
