Re: More Engine Problems - Any Ideas Please

Well, I got myself a can of Carb Cleaner (£4.50 at the local car emporium who I go to as I cant stand Half Ords..).. Got the car started, albeit with a decidedly lumpy tickover. Sprayed the various visible hoses one by one... Nothing.. Might be that the problem is somewhat obscured by the lumpy tick...

Re: More Engine Problems - Any Ideas Please

Thanks DIS, My usual shop for car supplies was shut today, so no carb cleaner so far. I'm guessing this stuff is flamable right>? Do I need to be ultra-careful spraying it around whilst the engine is running? I don't want my pride & joy going up in flames just when I'm so close to getting her back o...

More Engine Problems - Any Ideas Please

Hello fellow enthusiasts, Well I thought I was getting close to the point where I might actually get the car back on the road.... but no, of course there was always going to be trouble lurking under the bonnet, just when I didn't want it.. So far, I have replaced the: 1) Distributor and rotor arm 2)...

Re: Not a Quiz, But What are These Things?

Thanks David, the disconnected pipes / unused openings had me confused. I remember the auxiliary pump running on from my first ES, but since I've not actually had the current car out on the road yet, I haven't really had a chance to assess the 'normal' running of this car. Watch this space for more ...

Ok, here's another thing that is a mystery - any clues about what it is and its function?

Asfalt - Swedish Motoring Programme - 480 Episode!!

Hello all, Just came across this wonderful tribute to the 480 on YouTube - its a programme called 'Asfalt Motormagazin', a kind of retro Swedish Top Gear. Have a look - ignore the first (very odd) minute or so - it is worth the wait, especially as it has English subtitles for us non-native Swedish s...

Re: Injectors overhaul

Cheers Chris for your insights - it looks like my engine is a B18FP unit, which (luckily?) doesn't have a MAF, EGR or other complex gubbins attached:) Had the air pressure sensor off this afternoon, and noticed an immediate difference to the running of the car. On starting, prior to disconnecting, t...

Injectors overhaul

Reading around various threads and the dreaded Haynes book of despair, it sounds like stripping down and checking the fuel injection system and associated wiring should be a relatively straightforward job. However, standing at the front of the car, looking into the engine bay, it doesn't look to me...

Not a Quiz, But What are These Things?

Hello folks, Just wondered if anyone could put names / functions to the items (1-4) shown below? Knowing would certainly help make my reading of the Haynes book of confusion somewhat easier! I believe item 1 is a fuel pressure regulator (now that jay-kay-em has put me right!) http://i1333.photobucke...

Re: Blanking EGR Valve?

Ok, checked the Haynes manual (p129) again, where the only reference to the EGR sits, together with a picture of the EGR system (fig 4.52).

Turns out I should have gone to SpecSavers

Will resume my education at the weekend. With my glasses on this time :)

Re: Blanking EGR Valve?

Haha! Well I guess that explains the amount of fuel that spilled out! I'm sorry for the confusion - I'm stumbling along clutching at straws I'm afraid, and the Haynes manual definitely shows the item pictured above as the EGR valve  Thanks for your comprehensive answer and very well set out adv...

Re: Blanking EGR Valve?

This thing: Lettering indicates it is a Bosch unit. http://i1333.photobucket.com/albums/w636/mmcare00/EGR_zpsklgj2xkc.jpg Got it off, but can't really see where to go next, as there is no obvious way to look inside the beastie. The petrol that flooded out of it appeared to be clean, and there were n...

Blanking EGR Valve?

I'm trying to eliminate the most likely causes of a very sooty exhaust at idle and when warm (car not moving, all in workshop) and have read on various forums about the role played by the Exhaust Gas Recycling (EGR) valve. A number of sites suggest blanking it off, as for most driving conditions it ...

AIr filter arrangement-replace the standard filter box if that's your thing-extra pipe so it plugs onto your existing fitting to airbox with upper half of box removed. £8 Haynes book of lies. £5  Hello there, Laughed at the Haynes reference! I'd be interested in the air filter thing. Can you p...
