Re: 1988 Volvo 480 ES - A New Era Dawns: One year on

Thank you, early cars suffer a bad rep which in my experience is unjustified but it certainly a really nice looking thing now The only bad rep the early cars have is dodgy electronics, and even that can be sorted out. The rest is just neglect, early cars are older than the latest. Yours looks stunn...

Re: Look who's back up for sale

Don't know how it works for MOT, for APK (Netherlands) you pay 20-30 € for the test, many workshops offer it to do for free if you combine the APK with service maintenance. If it fails APK they will fix the defects (unless it's really bad and expensive - then it's up to the customer) and then you ge...

There is an auto/Diesel subframe (Diesel on the 440/460) and a manual subframe, 1992 saw the change from plain rubber to oil filled gearbox mount (both are unobtainium)

Re: 480 for a car review wanted!

I think that is just what Steph needs. Remember that she is the "artist" that makes the video, we merely supply material. If it's got a story attached to it like you have, it will help making her video interesting. And during these uncertain times of lockdown, it's definitely going to help that she ...

Re: My new life with a youngtimer

Just for fun. I found the latest import tax evaluation on a Volvo 480 in the public tax system. The car was evaluated in june this year. A 1992 480 ES (milage ?) Price new in 1992 39.399 £ or 44.323 euro Estemated sales price 9.985 £ or 11.200 euro Import tax 5445 £ or 6130 euro I'm not sure how it...

Re: 480 for a car review wanted!

There is no hurry, I've not even heard back from John de Vries whether he will like the idea or not to be interviewed. Then data needs to be collected for her, because she wants to know what she is going to talk about. :) I did this with the idea in mind of making the rescue cars known to a wider pu...

480 for a car review wanted!

There's several car-related YouTube channels I'm following in the UK, some are pretty fun to watch. One is called "idriveaclassic", run by Steph, a young lady who doesn't do the oily bits, just how the car looks and drives: https://www.youtube.com/c/idriveaclassic/featured Instagram: https://www.ins...

Re: My new life with a youngtimer

I can find you a mint condition 1992 Turbo auto with 51,000 kms for 10,000: https://www.dijkstra-classic-cars.nl/onze-autos/480-turbo/ I guess the tax on importing a car, even over 25 years old, is tremendous in DK. In NL we have very high taxes on new cars, but the tax collector says deprecation of...

Re: Battery dying? Strange symptoms (for a newbie)

Done - I have just ordered the battery you have suggested. It is almost too easy... How nice to get help like this. Thank you Brinkie! Bummer... I thought it was the correct one, but it turns out you need a Varta D24 instead of the D59. However, the price, capacity, cold cranking amps, footprint an...

Re: Battery dying? Strange symptoms (for a newbie)

This sounds like a dead battery to me. As Volvo has been using the same battery for all their cars since the 1970s, every car parts shop or even the Volvo main dealer should be able to supply one. I have got a 60 Ah Varta D59 in my car presently because I could get a very good deal online, they're q...

Re: 1.7 480

Someone has to buy the ones others don't want! And that someone is me :D I can't tell you off because of that, as I did the same. I paid 1500 euro for a car with 200,000 miles on the clock, which turned out to be in need of 600 euro immediate repair, had a bit of rust on the arches and worst of all...

Re: 1.7 480

Wow, I didn't know that in the UK the 1.7 litre engine was available until model year 1994, I think it's the ony market where they sold the S, ES and Turbo together in the same model year. In its native country, it was 1.7 ES until model year 1991, 1.7 S in 1992, 2.0 S in 1993 (in Germany in 1994/19...

Re: 1.7 480

Having read the ad and checked the details, I think the seller is a wannabe trader and doesn't know anything about the 480. He only gave very sparse pictures, none from the rear and none under the bonnet. The MOT history looks "interesting", there are sudden jumps in mileage which suggests an instru...

Re: Another potential rescue ?

This is not an unusual story, I've read many stories about an owner who has left the country but can't part with his or her car. There is a rare French car in the storage where my folding caravan (and soon campervan) also sits, the car is on pre-2001 style plates so it didn't see the light of day f...

Re: Another potential rescue ?

According to the chap who's posted it, the car does actually live next to an MOT station, and was garaged because its original owner left the country but kept the car. This is not an unusual story, I've read many stories about an owner who has left the country but can't part with his or her car. The...

Steel vs polyester bumper support

Just in case anyone is wondering a polyester bumper support (to replace the one in steel that has rotten away) will be strong enough to withstand a crash. It can hold a train carriage. https://www.theguardian.com/world/2020/nov/02/all-cetaceans-go-whale-sculpture-stops-dutch-train-crashing-in...

Friendly people of the UK, I really like your country and the friendly folks that are living in it. There are many places I still have to visit. Re: Scrap or Restore, youtube 480

By the looks of it, it's been sat in a garden, partly overgrown, so expect a lot of rot. Rear bumper hanging, looks like there's not much metal left. Both rear lights cracked. I'd say it would be a very challenging job to get it back on the road, if not a bottomless money pit. I've scrapped a 1990 T...
