Looks great. Always nice to see a 480 with gleaming paint. Well done to everyone's efforts, past and future.

Re: Disaster!
I have weld repaired subframes before - and the jury is out if that is allowed "officially" you can't weld repair a subframe. I say officially, because my argument is "how the hell are they constructed?" Yeah, my viewpoint entirely. However, Mr. DVSA he say : 5.3.3. Suspension arms, rods, struts, s...

Re: Disaster!
Nigel sorry to hear this. I saw a picture of a rotted out 480 subframe the other day, can't remember where, and thought " you know what, its only a matter of time before one of these gives way " You just have to hope and pray that the MoT process is robust enough to catch any more. I have weld repai...

Re: William's 1993 480ES Two-Tone
Hey William, your car looks really smart. Hang in there old chap. No one said any L-reg car is easy or cheap to maintain; that's why they are rare after all. Sometimes I get down with any project - but I think the saving grace with the 480 (for me anyway) is the numbers. When we take the 2.0 Limited...

Re: Volvo 480 Turbo from Siberia
Hi Spainal That supplied coolant circuit diagram is also fairly accurate to where the pump is located. http://www.jaykayem.co.uk/photos/480/Update5/5-4-0.jpg It's located under the ABS pump, on the chassis rail (or "longeron"). Please note, picture is a RHD car with later ABS & TRACS. To the right o...

Re: It Ran When Parked! An Calamitous Update
Volvo ran many safety car prototypes and I know the VESC from the mid seventies had crumple zones. This no doubt fed into the 240 way before 480. The only thing I know the 480 for pioneering is the impact absorbing bumper, where they can take a considerable knock and still maintain their shape. Sayi...

Re: It Ran When Parked! An Calamitous Update
Oh no! Genuinely saddened by that this morning. As if 480's haven't got enough struggles in this world staying alive, without fighting off bin lorries too! I sincerely hope you are able to control the repair process. I once had a really good K plate Cavalier as a daily. Just spent some money...

New 480 @ The Lakes
Stopped by the Lakes today and was astonished to see a fresh 480. Might be old news to some I guess. https://thumbsnap.com/i/LQJxkaEL.jpg Was told to leave well alone; apparently purchased by the proprietor with a broken cambelt and "he's going to stick a replacement head on it".. which I take with ...

Re: Volvo 480 turbo '95 no start
Yep, my Turbo cranks that long and every single YouTube video I have watched of a Turbo does just the same. You could argue the Turbo does have a MAP sensor - being integral to the EZ210K via the vacuum line connection. Fuel / Ignition / Air & compression. Work your way through those methodically. M...

The way that’s cranking and running at the same time, double check your firing order after the lead/cap swap. Keep in mind, flywheel end is number 1.

Re: 1992 480ES - no MOT since 2017. Thoughts?
....but want to avoid welding where possible. Hi James, If you have a strong aversion to welding, then I think searching for a J-reg anything without an MoT is risky business. Take a long flat bladed screwdriver, a crawler mat and prod the hell out of it. If he doesn't approve, just walk. Rear torq...

It's the Turbo that keeps on giving; now yours for £4000.
Still missing a centre cap, door mirrors now odd and the passenger interior door handle now completely missing, not just cracked.

There was me thinking it was a neater, safer solution (mega-fuse included).

Re: celibration seat swap
I have tried seat & retrimming repairs myself and it's a nightmare. It never goes back together quite right - for me anyway. "Hog-rings" are the invention of Satan himself. When you see these factory tours of trim shops, and you see the staff at work, it's a miracle to behold. Keep in mind that Cele...

And are turbos more expensive to maintain? I've never heard that about them, other than the usual bits of unobtainium Sadly, that is the turbo lottery. The concept of a turbo can be incredibly reliable when looked after. You might own one for years and never have any trouble. Sadly, if it's due to ...

Re: AWD conversion
Hi Andri! Anything is possible with time, patience, skill, facilities and of course, money. Search clubgti.com for countless 4WD conversions over the years. Plenty of mk2 Golfs have had their boot floors removed and modified to accommodate a diff. Search key words like "synchro" or "Haldex" to find ...

Volvo 480 (GT?) For Sale
This one here confused me; but that doesn’t take much  Listed as a 480 GT, but with a dubious GT badge. Isn’t one of the two GT metallic colours and doesn’t have the crazy imprint leather. Apparently the V5 states “GT” and the registration checker I use agrees. Agrees with the number plates t...

Re: Oil pressure
Just to reiterate David above ^ At idle, with hot oil, the oil pressure light is boss. Until that starts flickering at idle, you have nothing to worry about. (Assuming the oil pressure switch is working fine and comes on with the engine off, that is!) Ignorance is bliss as they say, and if it was a ...
