Re: 1.7 480

Wow, I didn't know that in the UK the 1.7 litre engine was available until model year 1994, I think it's the ony market where they sold the S, ES and Turbo together in the same model year. In its native country, it was 1.7 ES until model year 1991, 1.7 S in 1992, 2.0 S in 1993 (in Germany in 1994/1...

Re: 1992 2.0L £1500 on Facebook

Cheers guys! Believe me I don't intend to buy blind again... the one and only time I have ever done this and I certainly got a tad more than I bargained for (mostly water) I've asked the seller if its still available... just to feed my curiosity :P If my engine turns out to be seized I'll be ...

Re: Rescue Car: R1

If needs be - and assuming the ICV is the same one as on the later 1.7 & 2.0 engines - I have a good working spare that you can have.

Sorry, don't have the hinge pieces though :(

Re: 1992 2.0L £1500 on Facebook

"still waiting for clutch to be fitted" - that's a bargaining point right there. Steering wheel cover - could be horrors beneath that! Other than that, (and the previous mentioned points) it could be worth a proper look at; But for me it's not £1500 worth of car. Although I was quite positive, I wa...

Re: Rescue Car: R1

Looking good Jeff and coming on well! Regarding the cold idle, I remember that my 1988 480 back in the day frequently suffered from a poor idle. The main (but not only) culprit turned out to be that, for some reason, that particular car ate distributor caps for dinner - fortunately in those days the...

Alfie Darlington (which is in County Durham, not Yorkshire, as Alan should know since I know for a fact he's been there  ;) ) is not far from me. If you (or anyone else) is interested in the car I would be happy to go and look at it for you as soon as such frivolities as looking at cars for sa...

Re: 1.7 480

I applaud your determination

I genuinely hope that on 2nd the car proves to be everything you want it to be, and launches you into the world of 480s with a smile on your face.

Keep us posted how it goes!

Best

Re: 1.7 480

To hopefully clarify both S model specification and engine size, I have photographed the relevant UK brochure pages for a 1994 model (produced late 1993), which the one we are discussing here appears to be: https://i.postimg.cc/zD0Pk2XM/20201115-165800.jpg https://i.postimg.cc/hvyyPv5g/20201115-1658...

Re: 1.7 480

Robert, the S was sold in the UK much longer with the 1.7...Volvo obviously decided to inflict the last of them on us!!

Re: 1.7 480

That is weird - insurance can be very strange!!

Perhaps they think with alloy wheels you'll be more careful?

Anyway, you'll need to fit some alloy wheels first - a couple of sets of 14" alloys on ebay around the £120 mark IIRC - so you'd still save money overall!

Re: 1.7 480

I'll second that Ben - we need young people interested in classic cars, especially these classic cars! GCooper, I've just realised that while we've chipped in with our thoughts and advice, only Ben ventured an answer to your actual original question of "what's it worth". If it lives up to its descri...

Re: 1.7 480

The 1.7 is actually my preferred engine because of insurance costs (I'm still 18, 19 next month) And don't they all have alloys? Good motive re the engine size - I presumably you have established that it would make quite a difference to the insurance costs? No, they don't all have alloys - the S mo...

Re: 1.7 480

Are you going to view it? Or simply buying unseen? How bad do you think it'll be? I'll have 1k left to sort rust and suspension Assuming you can do all the work yourself, you’ll spend a grand getting it mechanically perfect. The more “seasoned” amongst us know that all that glitters isn’t necessary...

Fantastic day's work - well done! All my speedo cog replacement exercises have involved buying cogs in: that must be so so useful being able to print them off yourself. From your final photo your panel looks fully illuminated, despite your comment about a possible missing light behind the rev counte...

Re: Scrap or restore? Honest opinions needed!

Wow, I have no idea what that extra battery termnal is for! The fat one, which will be bolted to the inside of the wing area next to battery before going down to engine and gearbox is the standard negative terminal. The one with red wires is your standard positive terminal. Where does the extra wir...

Re: Scrap or restore? Honest opinions needed!

Are you going to turn it over by hand first? I would, after maybe a bit of light oil in the spark plug holes over night. Next day rock backwards and forwards, then turn over with big socket on bottom of engine, accessed with driver's wheel off, or jack up one wheel with car in gear and rotate that ...
