Re: Infocenter/speedometer/tachometer all is black

Relay 4.35 sits on the back of the instrument cluster, under a white plastic cover. (I have read suggestions that in later models the relay sits somewhere else) The contacts of the relay could be contaminated so it would not connect in any position, but I agree it is not very likely that both positi...

Re: Infocenter/speedometer/tachometer all is black

The main panel lighting is directly connected to +12V when the ignition is ON and the light switch is in the OFF position. The lights are fed by fuse 19, NOT fuse 1, which indeed drives the electronics but not the illumination. So you may want to check the correct fuse, just to be sure  . When...

Re: Heater Fan

I take it your "4" position doesn´t work due to problems in the VEM? Have you checked the fan itself by connecting 12V directly? And via the resistors? You say the fan switch is connected to 12V. Do you mean the input, common contact (red or white-black wire) of the switch has 12V? How about 12V on ...

Re: Replacing clutch - can't get starter motor out

The starter motor (in my 1987 model) is bolted on the front (bendix) side with 3 bolts and on the backside with a single bolt in a metal framework that has to be loosened up a bit. Volvo Service manual Group 33 gives details (action M2). If you haven´t done so already, download relevant documentatio...

Re: Knock sensor or...

Further research reveals: it is the knock sensor - you can test it by connecting it to the input of an audio amplifier and knock it on the table (I did, it produces sounds). The topic http://www.volvo-480-europe.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=4736 incorrectly suggests it is a temperature sensor and ...

Knock sensor or...

Hello experts out there! My engine protests heavily when I try to accelerate from say 1500..2000 rpm. I have to engage a lower gear, accelerate to 3500 rpm and then shift up in order to prevent unacceptable shaking of dash (and rest of car). My car has the B18E engine and Fenix 1 ECU. I am checking ...

Re: New idle con. but still bad

The "thing" clamped on the air cleaner box is the CO adjustment potentiometer. It should have an adjustable resistance (300 ... 10,000 Ohms) and controls the CO percentage in the exhaust gas between 0.5 and 2.0% according to my handbook. Mine (I have a 1986 480es with B18E engine) has a range 290 .....

Have you removed the light switch and connected the contacts manually? What happens?
Have you checked the relay (in the box under the bonnet)?

Re: Battery Drain

You may want to check the components connected to the "30" permanent +12V feed (some are not protected by a fuse so even after all fuses are removed, some components may still use energy). Such potential drainers include: - fuel system ECU - CEM - left door keyhole light - central locking / alarm sy...

Re: for what is this sensor?

The oil pressure sensor is more like a blob on the backside of the engine, on the right side (that is close to the timing belt), below the fuel injectors. It is hardly possible to take a picture of it (with the engine in the car). It has two connectors, one (yellow wire) to the oil pressure gauge an...

Re: Escalating electrical problems...so what's new?

Problem with rear demister solved? And how? Mine is permanently on, as soon as the engine runs that is... I am going to replace the CEM. If you manually short the switch contacts, does the indicator in the dashboard light up? Do the door mirrors warm up? The latter can be checked by carefully prisin...

Re: for what is this sensor?

With 4 connectors on top, it is the combined oil level and oil temperature sensor for the Information Centre - if it has only 2 connectors, it is the oil level sensor (before chassis 519640 these were separate sensors).

It is as you call it "something special" - the wiring diagrams indicate a LED with some electronics, so no bulb to replace
