Nothing like a bit of modifing to make small faults worse, alot worse!

Fuel pumps can get noisey as they get older my old xr3i's one made a hell of a racket!

If you are losing boost, check all the pipes, hose and clips from the turbo to the throttle body! Old jubilee clips and spilt hoses dont do the cars performance any favours.
