Re: Engine won't start

Assuming you've checked that there's nothing obvious that may have been disturbed during your procedure, here's stuff to check but before you do, get a good strong battery on it or jump leads from a running, charging vehicle and try it. I've had the scenario a few times over the years with the 480 w...

Re: My second 480...... project 'sleeper'

Good point about the column, will need to check that... Bad news on the sump mod front- http://i1043.photobucket.com/albums/b432/asummerfield222/IMG_1543_zpsobtfuqqv.jpg Oil pump is eccentric rotor type and is fed from the end of the sump that needs the chop :wall: May still be able to do something ...

Re: Rockingham track day

You don't need any special insurance. Everyone who attends a track day takes their car and their life in their hands! The evening at Rockingham was £85 for 2 hrs open pit lane track time. Need plenty of fuel too obviously and to give the car a good service beforehand. I used almost a full tank in th...

Re: My second 480...... project 'sleeper'

I gotta be honest, I don't like the sound of that  For starters the relationship between the steering rack and wishbones is then changed. This compromises the beauty of the Ackerman principle and the list of issues would go on and on with new brackets having to be made to support the wishbones ...

Re: My second 480...... project 'sleeper'

Spacing will need to be equal, absolutely. Will need to be thought about in terms of rigidity and strength too. There's bound to be a change in geometry but I think getting the ride height right on the springs will be all good. Wishbones inclined upwards, like when lowering a car, gives more camber,...

Re: My second 480...... project 'sleeper'

Had another play about with the engine fitment today, I tried it again but this time with the alternator and tensioner on. Fouls the chassis rail a treat :wall: Tensioner is actually ok but the alternator pulley hits with the engine in the same, seemingly sweet, spot. Obvious thing to do is cut a bi...

Re: Coolant

The original stuff was green in colour (or at least that was what was in my blue one when I bought it and that had benefitted from a full Volvo dealer service history) so I replaced it with green G48, which I ran for a few years in it without issue, although I subsequently found out that, chemically...

Re: My second 480...... project 'sleeper'

Cast aluminium. Cut and shut is possible, I think this may be a good idea and would go a long way towards the aforementioned 'wiggle room'. Cleaning is a long way off yet, not until welding! The grease and oil have kept it relatively well preserved in places

Re: My second 480...... project 'sleeper'

Got a bit more serious with trying to see how the engine will fit in the 480 today so lifted it out again and got the car up and stripped back a bit. It's a very tight squeeze into the bay! http://i1043.photobucket.com/albums/b432/asummerfield222/IMG_1530_zpsppqsichb.jpg http://i1043.photobucket.com...

just for shits and giggles... it's tight but she goes! http://i1043.photobucket.com/albums/b432/asummerfield222/IMG_1528_zpsrypx7xzg.jpg Tell me you don't want a 480 with that under the bonnet ;) It actually lowered in without cutting or removing anything :hopping: without gearbox obviously, but it ...

Re: Rockingham track day

Your car should be better I think, as it's newer and probably has the vented discs, mine's got the solid discs so more prone to cooking! Definitely gonna need a brake upgrade for the 'sleeper' Need to do something with the crankcase breathing as well as I think my recirc is knackered and letti...

Rockingham track day

Took the turbo out at Rockingham this afternoon, awesome fun :hopping: The car performed really well, held its own out on track amongst some pretty quick cars! I think I might have knackered my recirc valve though  Other than that, faultless. Pulled like a train lap after lap, oil and engine te...

Re: My second 480...... project 'sleeper'

I think it all depends on how friendly Ade's MoT manny is ? ? Very friendly! ;) Genuinely dangerous will fail (rightly so, I firmly believe in vehicle safety testing as most people don't have nearly as much to do with the maintenance of their cars as most of us lot), silly niggles and non standard ...

Re: My second 480...... project 'sleeper'

Good to know mate, bit shit though ain't it? Hopefully this will be a mute point anyway as I would like to retain the PAS unless there's absolutely no way the engine will fit with the pump attached. If I do go manual rack there's two saving graces that occur to me- 1. If it has to be re-registered b...

Re: My second 480...... project 'sleeper'

I can see a problem if you retained the PAS rack but without the hydraulics attached, manual rack with everything removed is surely ok???

Oh yeah, Jifflemon, thanks for the info, I hadn't thought that far ahead but I think a Q plate and the BIVA check are gonna be likely :(

Oh well, small stumbling block in a journey of mountains.....

Re: My second 480...... project 'sleeper'

Or am I just dangerously mental???

Incidentally, thinking of traction, the Saab engine and box are quite a bit heavier than the Volvo powertrain so this will help.

Re: My second 480...... project 'sleeper'

I intend to do something with the brakes once it's up and running, also, as part of the subframe mods I intend to stiffen it up a lot as well. Also looking at a strut brace as essential. The 400+HP is a long way off yet, not going for that big turbo straight away as it will require custom manifolds ...

Re: My second 480...... project 'sleeper'

Better answer than you'd have got from me! I've never had a car modified to this extent and TBH I've never declared any mods to insurance, just risked it for a biscuit for fear of £££££££££££££££££££££. Interesting that you got a cheaper quote on the V70 with mods. I am curious what it will co...
