Re: Alternator trouble shooting

ah.... we're talking about the SS1 here? I'm going to guess its running something ford'ish under the bonnet? You'll be running a classic alternator if so, either the Lucas A127,or a Bosch 55 (in, I suspect, the LH position). very simple alternator, was a dream to rebuild either! Plus there's PLENTY...

Re: Fuel tank

for info I check it when tank is empty (nearly) and then confirm that it agrees when i add 40litres, TBH fairly accurate most of the time.

PS when the range gets to 11 iles the next step is ' - - - ' , which I took as being 'you're own your own from here pal' :-)

Re: Motorbike sidecar with 480 front orange indicator light

There has been a small Italian manufacturer who used actual Volvo 480 front lights. Can't remember which one, though. and there was company that took a TR7 (GRINNEL?) and re-clothed it in GRP and they used the front lenses, but maybe not the holders as you changed the front bulbs from INSIDE I gues...

Re: Front seatbelt buckle

Hi all I will need to replace the front seatbelt buckle on the driver side. I have noticed a crack and I think it is a MOT failure. If you happen to have one knocking about give me a shout please or if they can be replaced by anything else could let me know as well? Best Moi a crack in the plastic ...

Re: Fuel Pump

I need to move my car out of the garage temporarily so put the dash wiring loom back in and she turns over however I can’t get the fuel pump to run. Having done some research the fuel pump should run for a few seconds on position 2 then stop and wait for position 3 then start again, can anyone conf...

Re: CEM Problems - Replacement unit needed, Help!

Swapped CEM but still runs poorly. Hard to start. Seems some like one sensor is not working. Got new sparks, cables and ignitor. Where should I start troubleshooting? Disconnecting a sensor at a time and listen for changes? If there is no change it could be the faulty one. Or are there any suggesti...

Re: Alternator trouble shooting

Just reread your question and handbrake (P) is not included in test and should only light when handbrake is on. OK some more digging required I think . . . . I know that the SS1 has a fluid level indication but not seen a switch on the top of the 480, maybe only certain models? (hand book says hand...

Re: Alternator trouble shooting

I'll have a go at that , I was also going to take the wire from alternator through a bulb to live side of battery as that is on ign side of circuit and see if it lights then check voltage (assuming I get some illumination) other than that need a new reggy, or brushes and / or slip rings worn away wi...

Re: Melting wires under the relay box

there are TWO types of relay, different pin-outs :-( you can here http://www.volvo-480-europe.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=12&t=35398#p212332 made a similar mistake once before with previous car, I'd just chucked in a relay from spares box, never checked the pin-out, the wee puff of Jo Lucas was a bit ...

Alternator trouble shooting

Wifes car just died :-( diddly squat change in voltage from alternator when changed from ign off to idle to 2000rpm. new battery (ie nicked from SS1) got it going the half mile home. something niggles me that if the warning light doesn't come on when ign is turned on then this prevents the alternato...

Volvo Sweden wants the 400 series to go to oblivion. The poor build quality of the Dutch Volvo's and the Renault running gear makes them think those were no real Volvo's. . can't be that bad, we are all still running them. . . .  although i accept 'not a real volvo' but then again the ...

Re: Wanted : Alternator tension nut/assembly, 2.0ltr auto

Will is this the adjuster which (should) be tucked in at front of alternator, on mine there is a small 'kink' in the hose so that you can get a socket drive direct onto the end of the adjusting nut? (thoughtful bunch VOLVO  ) I'll have a look cos I'm sure I have (had) a spare. If i find it I'l...

Re: Lily the turbo's strange noise

You might be lucky and find it is one of the tensioner on front of engine, either the idler or tensioner, they can squeal then go quiet, took me ages to track it down. even tried removing alternator belt to rule that out :-)

hope not a turbo :(
