2ltr Celebration running on Magnatech 10w40 When first purchased Volvo used Shell Helix Ultra 5w40 , the vehicle ran fine but despite the low mileage it did drink the stuff, I do not have this problem with the Magnatech. It is reckoned that the 1.7 is not the smoothest of units but I must confess I ...

Re: Alternator swap...

As long as it physically fits it will be fine. The voltage regulator will handle the voltage and the charge will be dependant on the demand, yes its capable of a greater output but it should be fine. After all, the battery is capable of pumping out several hundred amps which is demonstrated if you a...

Re: Adhesive Strip for Exterior Door Trim

Try ebay or Amazon. Check for double sided adhesive tape for vehicle trim. There is plenty to choose from but make sure it's waterproof. To aid positioning when re fitting If the trim is still fitted, prior to it's removal apply some masking tape to the panel next to it, and clean off all silicon wa...

Re: Agreed Valuation / Mileage Insurance?

My apologies if you are already aware but unless things have changed, do remember that classic car policies do not build up no claims discounts. I spent many a happy year running exotics on peanut insurance quotes only to discover I had lost my no claims discount. Classic car policies are excellent ...

Re: spare wires i found ???

Good Question.

Straight answer is I do not know.

However, try pulling back the covers and check the cable colours. Then look at the wiring diagram for the area where you found them to see what was fitted to that combination of cable colours.

Re: CV joint advice needed

Well I have tried but the best I can come up with is it looks like you are correct, yes they should be interchangabe. Parts for Volvos only list the one for all 400 series volvos with the only difference being ABS/Non ABS. I have found another site that splits them down to the different engine sizes...

Re: rear wheel bearing

If they were supplied for a 400 series they should be ok as the part number listed from Part for volvos says they fit both the 400 and 300 series. It lists the same part for all 480s and they will most probably fit many other vehicles. This might also explain the inclusion of a circlip, if the 480 d...

Parts For Volvos do an aftermarket rear wheel bearing kit part number PFV906224 @ £20.86 if that helps.

Unless I have the wrong end of the stick and assuming that everything works when the unit is plugged back into the new car, simply pressing the "unit" button on the info centre control panel will select between MPG, Miles etc or KM, Litres and back again as required. If you still have it in the car ...

Re: possible alternator issue

Dodgy earth possible but as you say if you are thinking, on the dashboard where is it? 16v on the charging is high, though as long as this settles down to nearer 13 to 14v it should be ok. in order to try and eliminate the earth theory if you have a multimeter, with the engine running set it to volt...

Re: possible alternator issue

The brushes start off at the same size but without looking, yes if they have worn at different lengths then it does suggest it has worn out, this is certainly the next thing to do. For refernence the minimum brush lengths for the Paris Rhone alternator are 8mm and for the Bosch and Valeo its 7mm. Th...

Yes even with no charge light test regardless.

Good idea Glasgowjim as this method is free and can be done without the multimeter.

Re: possible alternator issue

If you have a multimeter start by testing what you know to prove it is ok. Lets for now ignore the alternator and try to prove the charge light. No charge light with ignition on and engine not running. On the alternator there is a small red and brown cable, this supplies 12volts to the alternator. R...

Re: running to much bhp for my clutch

I am still doutful that things will line up. Unfortunately when the starter engages it drives towards the ring gear and then spins so unless there is a way of compensating for the loss of 15mm in how it is fitted, I still think it would miss. The starter motors may be the same but I assume the their...

Re: running to much bhp for my clutch

Firstly well done in getting 220bhp ,I had 290 in my MGB V8 power is fun and scary with no grip. Anyway flywheel size I would guess that they are not interchangable. The first problem I can think of is that the ring gear size would also be different so starting it would be a problem as the starter w...
