You probably have a boost leak somewhere, my money would be a busted recirc valve leaking boost away.

Only way to tell is to watch the boost guage at it's running.
A richmod or Roboumod will sent the needle into the red.
Without, it won't!
Later Roboumods have a flylead coming out of them, early ones didn't I don't think.

You need to remember that the engines are a VERY old design now, especially the 1.7 and Turbo. The 2.0 is a slightly more refined revision, but still essentially the same engine. Perhaps it's a little different then for the B18FT. That's based on the earlier F2N engine, not sure if the shims are the same.
My B20F that's covered twice the mileage has always ran quieter so perhaps the arrangement is a little different.
