Re: Dashboard Bulbs

T5s and T10s were and easy and cheap find but when it comes to this strange socket on the infocenter things get crappy (part 3342604). I've been told by the guy who sold me the other bulbs that this was a B8.4d socket. I've found the suitable LEDs but they all are front light LEDs and I will get sh...

Re: Pollution rides out!

Just sorting through a few photos... At the main dealers: http://i1322.photobucket.com/albums/u565/jamesy12345/191220121143_zpsltwj56fb.jpg Definitely one of the lowest cars Volvo built, its "successor" C30 is over 12 cm taller. Only the P1800 is lower by almost 4 cm. http://i1308.photobucket.com/a...

Re: Info Centre PCB / VDO 734 Needed

The info centre board itself at fault is very rare. The usual suspects are the background lighting and the power supply. I always use the following systematic approach to repairing instrument clusters. 1) Check the light. If you turn the rheostat under the steering wheel all the way up (maximum ligh...

Re: Some episodes from the life of my 480

I recognize this car and its owner! He attended a workshop meeting last March. Looks like a complete writeoff to me. Very, very sad indeed. Though the bad driver stopped to see if he didn't actually hurt someone, he wasn't brave enough to wait for the police and face the consequences. Since he aband...

Re: Some episodes from the life of my 480

Not all pre-production cars were scrapped, some of the pre-production bodies were used on the assembly line and some of the electrics (rear handles with lighting, different indicator clicking sound from the CEM) were used, too, though they weren't used in regular production. A genuine pre-production...

Re: Sill Repair or Replacement?

With little modification, the wheel arches of a 440 will fit also, and they are a lot cheaper. This is a German supplier, but I guess they are available in the UK as well. https://www.atp-autoteile.de/products/group/2835/1070101/list-1-20-0 (Please note that the Germans are on the Continent, "Beifah...

Re: Wanted, auto speedo sensor

The VIN for your Volvo 460 Turbo automatic is composed as follows: XLB = Volvo, L = 460, X = no SRS or seat belt tensioners, 19 = B18FT-engine, 3 = auto box, E = Europe, x = model year, C = Born, Netherlands, yyyyyy = serial number. (Apparently, they never envisaged to build more than a million cars...

Re: Part needed

If Volvo can't help you: try the Renault dealer. The F3-engines and JC-gearboxes have been used well into the 21st century, in hundreds of thousands of cars, far more than the entire Volvo 400-series. For instance, the crankshaft pulley of the B20F engine (2 litre) has been discontinued by Volvo sup...

You can tell by the identification (chassis) number.
MY 1992 ends at 580385
MY 1993 starts at 581000

Re: Wanted, auto speedo sensor

There are only two kinds of speedo sensors fitted to the 480. 3413744-8 up till model year 1992 3467846-6 from model year 1993 onwards No difference in what gearbox or engine is used. That, or the parts book may be entirely wrong. I am currently scrapping a 1990 Turbo with a good speedo sensor (at l...

Re: After more than a year of lurking, time to say Hello!

I knew these were a Holy Grail for 480 owners, so I looked for a car which already had them. :D
(although the Ventian Blinds seem to be the utmost wanted accessory - and they're junk I'm told)

Re: Moonroof Retrofit

Yes, that's definitely the way to go, the entire roof section needs to be transplanted. Might as well try and save the windscreen of the donor car, in case the one in the receiver car breaks.

Re: Info Centre PCB / VDO 734 Needed

If only the odometer and trip counter aren't moving, and everything else is working properly, then the info centre isn't at fault! Looks like the plastic gear inside the odometer is broken, that is a common fault. Replacement can be found for less than a tenner on eBay: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/271...

Re: Moonroof Retrofit

I've been looking into the same matter recently. In short: a roof transplant is possible. What you need: 1. Complete roof with moonroof, carpetry and electrics from a scrap car, preferably with a length of A-, B- and C-pillar left. 2. A new front windscreen. The old one probably won't survive the tr...

Re: Back for a third helping of 480.

The 480's before chassis no. 567600 a.k.a. phase 1 don't have headrests on the rear seats (the reason why my wife insisted on a phase 2, for the safety of our little ones). You could try and get rear seats from a scrap 480, or even go all the way and grab leather seats from a Celebration. There's en...

Re: After more than a year of lurking, time to say Hello!

Me too. I also love Paris Blue. This car I bought at a bargain when the Vase Green was in the shop for new wheel arches, sold it for a small profit when the APK (our MOT) expired. Last thing I heard that the kid who bought the car (he needed one after he totaled his mother's 480) managed to break th...

Re: Gearboxes...

You could try and look into a Renault JC5 gearbox from a Renault Mégane Diesel (F8Q-engine). That engine is spec'd at 200 Nm @ 2000 rpm, so the gearbox will be able to at least handle that amount of torque. The following gearboxes share the same final ratio (3.733:1) with the M59/M60, though I have ...

Re: After more than a year of lurking, time to say Hello!

Valve adjusting discs aren't exactly rocket science. They're just discs of a specific diameter and thickness. Shim plates for Renault F-engines should be widely available, with so many cars produced. A new head should have its valve clearance adjusted as well, so you're not out of the woods if you c...
