Re: Handbrake cable replacement - advice needed

This is strange, just replaced one hand brake cable yesterday on a 90 Turbo, and I didn't have to move any heatshield. Also, the nut mentioned in the picture is fixed to the cable and will not move, the other nut behind the balancer is the one I tightened to adjust the handbrake setting. You have to...

Re: front bumper removal?

Just be careful with the screws holding the bumper, on my car 3 out of 4 were rusted solid, so when I tried to remove them with a tiny little ratchet I actually sheared off the bolts! Remedied the mess by cutting off the rest of the bolts, drilling a hole where their base once belonged and then srew...

Re: My New Time and Money Sponge

There are replacement Turbos from several other manufacturers which should fit, there's a vendor on Ebay Germany who sells new Turbos which should fit to the block with no modifications for less than 250 Euros. Con: they are only oil-cooled, so the water feeds would have to be modified and an additi...

Re: For Sale: Purple&Red 2-board ECU

100% correct. I got them because I got a chip which supposedly had a tuned mapping on it, but it turned out the the eeprom had "bit rot" and was inoperable. They are now both refitted with their standard factory chips and run fine. However, since they are the 2-board-version they are easier and chea...

For Sale: Purple&Red 2-board ECU

Hiho, after doing some experiment with my '90 Turbo I have 2 ECUs for sale which I used to test a chip I got from a friend. Both have been opened by me (obviously, to test the chip), the plastic pieces holding both boards together are a bit damaged in the purple one. The first is an old (purple) ECU...

Re: wheel arch covers

How about some of these Ricer-style bolt-on wheel arches also often seen on Motorsport Porsches? You will have to cut your original arches a bit to use the extra room they provide, but with fitting wheels they can really look great. I still think about adding some if my Turbo ever becomes a rat-racer.

Re: TD04 Conversion advice?

You would have to adjust the ECU mappings, but I can't see why it couldn't be done. Maybe a bit overkill, and you would have to adjust several other parts and pipes, but yep, should work. The 850 T5 also uses a TD04, but HL-15G. Maybe the 13T from the 193HP softturbo would also be a good choice, not...

Re: no brakes

Do you happen to have an ABS MKII-unit? With the small high-pressure-reservoir next to the almost triangular brake fluid reservoir? If so, the bleeding procedure for these is kinda different. Read it up in the original Volvo repair manual if you have access to these. If not, please consider going to...

Re: suspension 101, gas v oil shocks

Hmmm, KYB seem ok - our local garage always uses them as replacement when the customers don't specify anything else and they haven't ever had any complaints about them. My rear shocks are definitely Bilstein B6 btw, got one out and found some numbers imprinted on the shock itself. Only... they don't...

Look at this: http://www.volvo-480-europe.org/volvo480/faq/faqitem.php?article=faq/30/display/replacement_instrument_panel Should clear it up, check if your infocentre is the correct version. you can adjust the fuel capacity with the potentiometer on the infocentre knob board, takt off the knob and ...

Re: Bonnet wiring

The screws go through the corner of the plastic parts into the metal, I think they were of the self-threading kind.
They are located right behind the hinges next to the windscreen on the lowered edge of the plastic trim surrounding the wipers.

Re: Cable routing for Amp

Just wanted to say thanks - got it figured out :)
Behind the darn ABS MK2 unit there was a tiny little unused breakthrough in the firewall - the last unused hole left :)
I was able to route the powe cable that way and it's working fine :)

Re: which engine is better

The Turbo needs more care. You may only open the throttle after the oil reaches at least 70°C and have to let it cool down after harsh/fast driving before shutting it off to prevent the turbo oil feed from getting clogged with residue. Plus under the bonnet you have a lot of additional stuff that g...

Re: Strange chip questions

Found a bit more info. Apparently the chip the programming resides on is of a different type, the soldered legs just create a bridge from ground to ground, nothing spectacular. The extra legs are actually not needed in this case. the chip is a tad longer than the socket and these legs will not fit a...

Re: suspension 101, gas v oil shocks

FYI, I recently bought a Turbo with Hausser springs. The document for the springs says that there were different sets for different combinations of shocks: One for Sachs gas shocks (I think they were of the "Super Touring" line, these were standard on my old 480 Turbo), one for Koni Yellow, and one ...

According to this site the orange and red ECUs also came as a two-board version? Gotta check mine, that would make things a lot easier :)

Re: Cable routing for Amp

Thanks a lot, that's what I was thinking of too, since that is the way I handled it on my 855. The difference is that the 850 has a higher box with a shallow lid, so you can route the cable trough the side of the box, whereas on our cars the lid is the thing which you have to cut into... I still wan...

Strange chip questions

Hello everyone, I recently got a chip from someone who owned a 480 Turbo a few years back. Said it was installed in his ECU, but he switched it back to standard before selling the car. The chip seems to be a standard EEprom (window covered with Tape against UV light), but what puzzled me was that on...
