Re: Space saver tyre ?

Thanks for the info, the tyre is like new, it still has the blue stripes on the tread, so I will keep it and just be careful if I do have to use it.

I suppose the advice from a company that sells tyres would be slightly bias towards buying new ones on a regular basis, lol.

Regards

Space saver tyre ?

Hi I was thinking about how useful my spare tyre would be in the event that I might actually use it. Mine (like a lot of other people I imagine is the origininal one), it has never been used, but its coming up to 21 years old. Advice from the tyre trade say 6 years is about the life of a tyre. I hav...

Re: Agreed Valuation / Mileage Insurance?

My Dad had a recent experience with a car insurance claim involving his 26 year old Golf MK2. A truck scraped along the rear quarter panel, and as it was not my dads fault he went through the insurance because the truck did not stop. He didn't want the car written off, and it was covered by a standa...

Re: Agreed Valuation / Mileage Insurance?

I use Lancaster insurance. I had to send a selection of photos of the car and an estimate of what I thought the car is worth. I now have an agreed value of £2400.00 (I said 2500.00, so i wasn't far out). They also take into consideration invoices for restoration work that you have had done towards t...

Re: Mechanic in the West Midlands

I use Orjev's garage in Bilston for mine. The owner is a Volvo fan and drives a ten year old S80 (which he loves and won't part with). I tend to source my own parts and just get them to fit them for me as I like to try and use Bosch service parts. So far they have done my cambelt, full service, wish...

Re: Info Centre and Speedo - where to start?

Brilliant link to removing dash panel. I have been dreading getting at my speedo, now it looks straightforward thanks to those pictures (why do Haynes manuals make things look complicated).

Thanks

Wanted - Front Main Beam Light Unit

Hi everyone I got home from work on Friday and noticed the lens on one of my front lights smashed, I must have hit a stone or something on the motorway, can anybody help me with a replacement. Its the one above the bumper, drivers side (off side), that sits next to the daylight running light, glass ...

Sorting a Petrol smell from rear of car

I have spent the past year trying to fix this problem on my 1993 480 auto ES. Symptons are: Fuel smell when driving with windows/sunroof open. Smell seems to come from the rear of the car, especially strong from the O/S rear wheel arch. I checked the fuel filter, which just happens to be on this sid...

Re: Getting my 480 back on the road

I mentioned in a post in another part of the forum that I had replaced the CEM unit, but I didn't mention that while I was on my hands and knees in the passenger footwell (we have all been there) I noticed the door bottom. If I peeled back the seam sealer I could see rust. So I scraped the sealer of...

Re: Ticking under dashboard

Replacing the CEM (thanks GlasgowJim) has fixed the problem. I noticed my original CEM had what looked like corrosion, or a dullness to some of the soldered joints to the computer chips, I did try and clean them with PCB cleaner, but it was no good. Before installing the replacement CEM I sprayed th...

Re: Ticking under dashboard

I have had a good look today, and the clicking is coming from the CEM module, relay number 6. Mine has a CEM 111.

I suppose the simplest thing to do is change the CEM for another one and see if it still clicks, the only thing is where do I get one from, can anyone help.

Thanks

Re: Ticking under dashboard

No air con or ABS (thank god, that would be something else to go wrong). I have noticed that the brake pad warning and battery light sometimes glow, you only notice it in the dark, I'm not sure if its related or not. I was thinking of trying a different relay circuit board and seeing if it still cli...

Ticking under dashboard

I have made sure its not a bomb. But I'm getting a ticking noise, even when the ignition is off from under the dash (passenger side), guy who MOT'd it had a look and can't seem to find whats causing it, its to do with the flasher relay, but they work fine, hazzards work too, but when you put them on...

Re: Getting my 480 back on the road

Thanks for the sunroof info I will have a look at that.

With the speedo playing up, I just use a Sat Nav and that gives me a rough idea of speed, its pretty accurate as well, and tells me where i'm going, lol.

Getting my 480 back on the road

Hi Just thought I would post something. I took my 480 auto off the road during the winter months so I haven't been very active. But she is booked in for an MOT this Friday, so if I can get her through and with a bit of tax, I can start enjoying driving something interesting to and from work. I'd lik...

Rust Proofing

When I was looking underneath my 480 I notice some patches of surface rust on the small box sections close to the front jacking points. So I bought some Dinitrol rustproofing treatment and waited for a mild day. What also suprised me was the amount of grey primer showing under the car, it's as if th...

New member here

Carl from Much Wenlock, Shropshire

Just bought a 1993 black 480ES. One family owned since new with 34500 miles.

I'm in the process of replacing, discs, pads, exhaust, and a few suspension parts for MOT, then I will work on getting her looking like someone loves her.
