Hi Dan Since you mention that it usually happens in the morning it could very well be the injector o-rings. After you shut the engine of there is still fuel pressure and will leak out over the injectors overnight. Then in the morning you start it up, the engine gets hot and the leaked fuel evaperate...

Seems to describe the same problem my sister has with her 480, not much you can do about it but she has been driving it for about 40.000km's since it started doing it. The reason it doesn't do it when you drive it hard is becouse of the kickdown that you only use with max throttle.

The tacho sesor is under the starter en next to the rear engine mount in a hardtogetto place.

Resoldering the pins on the back of the dash has worked every time for me (never the sensor).

It CAN collapse, the bearing can go and if it really lets go the timing belt wil fail and kill your engine. Headgaskets are known te be very tough on these cars even if they overheat.

Had pretty much the same thing happen to a polo at work, the new clutch was worn after about 4000km's. Replaced the clutch for the second time and got an intern to give her a driving lesson
Haven't seen her since.

put some chalk or some other powder over the seals where it might leak, close the boot and spray the car with the hose, wait a little while and open the boot to see where the chalk has washed off. Thats probebly where the problem is.

You can't get the pistons out through the sump with or without the crank it won't fit, the head has to come off.

I could be wrong but i think the leaking one is the return pipe wich will run all the way to the fuel pressure regulator (near the injectors). The other one will only run to the fuel filter. It should be possible to cut off the broken part and shorten the hose a little, but it will be tricky to re-f...
