Re: Looking for a good London based volvo mechanic
Terry's Ltd in Tottenham is a fantastic garage. In fact it's the best I've ever used in my 20 years of car ownership (check out the google and good garage scheme reviews). Give Terry a call on 02088 008 862. I've been taking my 480 (and my Saab) to him for years and he's an admirer of the car. He of...

Re: 480 Breaking
Is the car Paris Blue (code 318)? If so, I'd be interested in both front wings, assuming they aren't rotted through at the sill... I'd also take the plastic window trims above the rear side windows, if they haven't faded to a weird bluey-white as one of mine has done.
Cheers

Leather seats for free
But don't get your hopes up too much - both front seats have split along one of the seams. Driver's is also worn at the bolster, front passenger's is in overall better condition. mechanisms/levers to put seats forward (to gain access to rear seats) work on both seats. Heated seats work on neither! R...

480 restoration project for sale
Hi everyone, I recently bought a set of celebration seats (to replace my tired standard leather ones) from a nice bloke called Richard. Whilst I was collecting the seats he told me that he has a 480 restoration project which he hasn't got time to finish, and which he'd like to sell on. He doesn't us...

Re: Gear linkage / leakage
From memory i'd say my bearing didn't look exactly like that either - but basically this was the part that had failed and was causing the leak on my car. Alan, the 'wobble' you describe sounds familiar, and wear on that bearing seemed to be the root cause of the issue. If I recall correctly the oil ...

Re: Gear linkage / leakage
Not sure if this is entirely relevant, as it sounds as though your leak is where boot meets diff, but I had an ongoing, infuriating, gear oil leak from this driveshaft which started at around 150,000 miles. I changed the boot which seemed to help for a bit, but the issue was general wear on the shaf...

Re: Wanted: N/S Front Wing, Paris Blue
Thanks very much, I'll bear that in mind. I'm off to have the MOT done next week, and I think I'll make a decision on the basis of that. The paintwork on the n/s of my car is in much worse condition than everywhere else (reason unknown) so it'd probably make sense to have the whole flank resprayed i...

Wanted: N/S Front Wing, Paris Blue
Hi all, As suggested in the topic line, I'm after a passenger side front wing in Paris Blue (code 318). My current wing has rusted through in the sill (and beyond!) and I'm entertaining the option of just replacing rather than welding. I have an O/S wing in the correct colour ready to go on the othe...

Re: 480 and the ULEZ
Thanks Robert, this is really helpful. So, assuming that i've read these correctly, the 1.7 turbo engine emits 0.29 g/km of NOx. the ULEZ limit for petrol engines is 0.08g/km. What are the chances that the manual n/a 1.7 goes that low...? Interesting to see that the 2.0 n/a unit produces more NOx th...

Re: 480 and the ULEZ
Got a reply from Volvo - and not a very helpful one: I am very sorry, but we failed to find emission information about this old car, also after looking in our historical archive. This type were certified by NedCar in the Netherlands, and we don’t have access to their old files. Also it is too old to...

Re: 480 and the ULEZ
My friend got original emissions data from Volvo (for his supposedly noncompliant V40) and submitted this to TFL. TFL then sent him a letter saying that his car meets the requirements of the ULEZ and wouldn't be subject to the charge. He laminated the letter and showed it to me :D I'm still waiting ...

Re: 480 and the ULEZ
Thanks Sylvia, and as you point out, sadly it's not a special edition - it's got the standard black and grey leather interior and the black (rather than green) pinstripe. I'll try and take/upload some pics - i'd intended to once it got to 200,000 miles as a celebration of its longevity! But here's a...

Re: 480 and the ULEZ
Glad someone's raised this. I'd intended to for a while but hadn't got round to it... Whilst this only affects Londoners and people living in other cities with clean air zones atm, this is clearly the direction of travel with petrol/diesel cars and we're all a long way off the historic exemption. Th...

Re: ABS Fault Problem
unless you get confirmation that another accumulator fits, then go with the part from Jaguar. It's expensive but it's a Teves part made in Germany - at least the one i got from them was - and it works perfectly. They should last around 8 years so if you intend on keeping the car it's not a bad inves...

Re: Flashing abs light
Just a thought on this. When you refit the accumulator (whether it's new or recharged) you should use a new small rubber washer with a circular cross section. Unhelpfully i have no dimensions for this, but one came with my jaguar accumulator. Without this - and given the pressure the break fluid is ...

Re: Flashing abs light
the recharge is certainly worth a go! £45 is a quarter of what I paid Jaguar for a new one ;) Autozone seems to think: "Nitrogen in the accumulator is pre-charged to approximately 870 psi. During normal operation, the pump and motor assembly charges the accumulator with brake fluid to an operation r...
