After rebuilding the engine in my B18U Volvo 440, it was sounding a bit tappety. I have re-ground the valves during the rebuild of the head, but everything went back in the same place. I checked the valve clearances and to my surprise, the clearances were, in all but one case, too LARGE. Having grou...

Are there any kind souls out there who can help me, with a few minutes to spare and access to a voltmeter? A test with a known running 400-series Volvo should help find out if the measurements on my car are correct. If anyone is kind enough to help with this, the procedure is as follows: i) Check th...

In terms of a brake upgrade, rather than forking out for over-the-top and silly price Brembos, Wilwood do loads of different calipers, some that are very light and will be suitable e.g. the four-potters. A local engineering shop should be able to knock together a suitable bracket for fixing to the v...

Front discs for the 400's are really cheap. As suggested, partsforvolvosonline do Mintex discs for £30 a pair (solid). Unfortunately, their postage is always steep unless you are buying a great hoard of stuff. I believe Eurocarparts may have just gone in to administration. GSF car parts list them...

1995 B18U engine.
It's only done a mere 112,000 but the engine still feels great, and after the overhaul I have just given it, I am hoping for the same again providing I look after it and change oil regularly.

If I can get the electrics working properly that is

After much electrical testing, it turns out that there is something wrong with the feeds to (at least) one of the relays under the dash. I replaced the two dodgy relays I had with ones from the scrap yard that I verified to be working out of the car with the help of a voltmeter and 12V battery. Afte...

A bit of extra testing has now been done. After limbering up with several classes of yoga, I was able to contort myself upside-down and back-to-front, and get at the relays 'hidden' under the drivers side dash, behind the normal fuse panel. Why these relays are not with all the other relays, providi...

After connecting the fuel pump to the car battery, it runs absolutely fine. I have eventually conducted the ignition coil power supply (terminals 1 & 2 on the front of the ignition control module with the coilpack removed) test using a 12V, 5W bulb. This does not give a flashing bulb when the starte...

The fluoring replaces the calcium in your bones, causing you bones to swell and become a weak, jelly-like substance if you get enough of it. Obviously, they stop being bones then and you have floppy arms/fingers etc. Mind you, I am sure you would need quite a reasonable dose of HF for this to occur....

Great news :D , changing the coilpack has done nothing to help :kill: die Volvo die. You may be going to meet your kindred in Albert Looms Scrapyard, Derby. By the way, the new coil measures 5330 ohms between pins 1 & 3, and this has a specified rating of 2500 to 5500 ohms. Not sure if this is still...

I think it is just a kacky design from Volvo here. As the front window is pushed up, it is also pushed backwards. A lot. This means the glass is constantly rubbing (cleaning?) anything off that area, so silicone spray every month or so will help. To my horror, when I took the car in for a service at...

After spending a while reading through this post it sounds very similar to my problem, especially with the 6500 ohms I am reading on the secondary coil windings. Glad I found this, as it is giving me hope. I will try an source a second-hand coilpack. Does anyone on here know of a spare kicking about...

There is a spring on the bottom of the rear calipers that releases the handbrake. Check that this isn't full of cr@p and blocking the spring release.

I bust the nipple off and mangled the thread in my old caliper. I got a second hand unit after cutting it off a car at a scrap yard (there were no ebay gems available at the time). As long as the brake fluid has been changed regularly, there should be no corrosion in the brake caliper bore and on th...

I am in the process of getting to the fuel pump to connect it to 12V, but I think this is a bit of a red herring. If it were purely the fuel pump I would be expecting a spark at the ignition end, but there is no spark either. Anyway, because I am now grasping at straws, I will connect the fuel pump ...
