Re: Am I mad?

Let's bring some sanity in this story then, shall we? :) Remember, ANY time spent to a non-exotic (exotic as in: worth tons of money) old car is futile. If you want to be completely sensible and rational, buy a Toyota Auris Hybrid. First, make an inventory of what you have got. Three complete cars, ...

Re: Am I mad?

Did it take three hours to swap the alternator, or three hours to fix the one you have taken out the car? Dead alternators aren't a specific Volvo 480 problem, they will die sooner or later on any car (for example I had a Ford Focus where it died after less than 100,000 miles / 8 years). The hardest...

Re: ABS Fault Problem

When ((ABS)) and ((!)) are lighting up at the same time, it is most definitely a faulty accumulator. The scary part: in an ATE MkII system not the inlet vacuum but the accumulator provides pressure for the brake booster. So you are not only losing ABS, but brake boost as well...

Re: Mystery sponge

The instrument cluster is on its way, but somehow the tracking information got lost on its journey across the North Sea; both PostNL and Yodel don't know its current whereabouts. Don't be alarmed, and don't be surprised either when it will be delivered today! Don't re-use the remains of the sponge, ...

Nice car!
Those wheels look like they are from a late model V70 (Ford Mondeo), if so, make sure you have proper spacers installed as the wheel hub is smaller.

Re: WANTED Manual gearbox

If he has a 480, the speedometer is electronic, even if it lacks an info centre. The 440/460 had mechanical speedo drives on almost all cars, only the the cars with an info centre (turbo and maybe some of the 2 litre) had an electronic speedometer pickup.

Re: wheel sizes

If you are going to fit 205/50-15 tyres 7J would be perfect. Even the standard 195/55-15 will fit.
I have 7J rims on my V70, factory fitted with 225 width tyres.

Make sure the rims have the correct offset (ET)

Re: 480 with sliding vinyl sunroof in Haarlem, Netherlands

Just a thought. The roof is part of the car's structure and an additional crossmember gives extra torsional rigidity. This is why the roof of a car with moonroof is different, the crossmember is located further aback. If you take out both the metal roof and the crossmember connecting both B-pillars,...

I know whose car that is. Don't have a pic right here, but the roof is from a Renault Twingo.

This is indeed one of the very last Volvo 480 that has been built; the last one off the line has number 594018, this one is at 594004.

3) Quiz that Volvo service centre. If they haven't got a wizened old grey haired bloke who starts to uncontrollably twitch when 480's are mentioned, it may be worth looking further afield.   I remember I was collecting the V70 after a repair. At the counter, the old grey haired m...

Re: How to fix the speedometer cable connector

Connectors are for swift installation of pre-made wiring looms in the factory. The speedometer sensor is passive, there are no parts in it that wear. Only the wiring itself can break. The speedometer circuit is made out of an oscillator (approx. 100 kHz), the oscillator itself is located on a small ...

+1 for the can of Wheels Gose Round beer from Left Hand Brewery; I have never drank that particular beer but they make some pretty good craft beers. A couple of years ago I got "paid" for a speedometer repair with a load of spare parts and a bottle of "Wake Up Dead" Imperial Stout. I guess the name ...

Re: Parts for the venetian blind

The reason you don't see many is because all the abovementioned parts were broken. It gives a nice "1980s" touch to the car, though. I would like to see how it works to adapt a cheap blind to the 480's rear window (and then sell it to gullible people for hundreds of euros, muhahahahahahah  )

I could hear the relay clicking rapidly as the passenger light tried vainly to lift itself out of the bonnet, so the first thing to do was to pull the relay out and re-flow the solder joints between the two boards, indicated here: https://i.imgur.com/k3n19Wy.jpg If reflowing of the solder joints do...

Ah, I see what you mean now, the picture should be a life saver to anyone who got stuck in the search for a blown fuse. :) Then I should repeat that the fuse box configuration is dependent on the VIN number. At least two completely different fuse configurations are known to exist, and I'm sure there...

Re: Useful to anyone?

If it comes from a scrap car, you'll need to provide the exact VIN or at least the model year, because the fuse box underwent a number of changes.
If if is in your car, I would keep it. It should be glued to the lid, but the one in my car has come loose, too.

Re: Coming to America - mathrock's USA Volvo 480 Turbo

I have seen the car a couple of years ago, the upholstery has fungus all over the place. Some of the cars mentioned on the website as in concourse condtion, are actually in a very sorry state. We nicknamed the collection "Swedish Deception" The location is very posh, and so thinks the propriet...
