Re: YANIC problem!

I do not work for an ISP, but I do have access to the www.volvo480register.nl website; when I find time (I really need to try and invent a TARDIS ) I will upload all documents there. Any scrap car from MY1989 and onwards will supply you the mating connectors for your instrument cluster. There i...

Re: YANIC problem!

Hi, I did take the whole LCD module apart too, and I'm wondering if the friction connector that presses onto the LCD itself is faulty/not making enough contact? Could be. But my experience, after having dealt with dozens of instrument panels, the LCD's in later ones rarely give trouble. You could tr...

Re: Speedo Fix failed - What to try next?

That assumption is correct. :)
There are tiny numbers inside the connectors on the instrument cluster which correspond to the pin numbers.

Re: Speedo Fix failed - What to try next?

did you get a chance to read it then? and if so what is the verdict? Again, swamped in trivial and non-trivial stuff... but I have grabbed the green book and found the information you required :) The signal is split over two connectors: Red connector pin 3 (black-brown wire) is the speedometer sign...

Re: Speedo Fix failed - What to try next?

I just want to express my compassion. In my 480 time I had struggled with this long time and it nearly drove me mad. Changed dashes and computers several times, in the end the cause seems to have been the speed sensor. [...] after over 10 years parted with the 1995 Volvo 480 ES 2.0 and haven't stop...

Re: Speedo Fix failed - What to try next?

Hold on, the speedo cable in the early models is not using shielded cable. I will try and look the exact specifications tonight, I have a specimen of the red and yellow connectors and a piece of the wiring harness. However, I am a bit forgetful lately, having worked until 1 am last night while the a...

Re: 480 GT breaking for parts!

Sounds like a brilliant idea to go to the Highlands instead of southern France this year, the aircon condenser of the V70 is on its last legs and repair is pretty expensive, a new pair of windscreen wipers is much cheaper! But this will be the first year we'll be towing a tent trailer, and we...

Re: Speedo Fix failed - What to try next?

If the sensor measures around 3 ohms (give or take a few ohms), the sensor is correct. (Usually) On the main board with the yellow and red connectors, there is a four-pin receptable which accepts four large pins from the speedometer/odometer assembly. They protrude through the main board. With a pai...

Re: How to increase power on a 1992 car but while keeping as close to original condition as possible

Considering your possibilities and limitations, putting on a turbo isn't as easy as it sounds. The engine has a different cilinder head, different inlet manifold and exhaust system, different electronics, different wiring loom, different sensors, completely different engine management (only the B18F...

Re: How to increase power on a 1992 car but while keeping as close to original condition as possible

You can't do much more with a 1.7 n/a litre engine, except for removing the catalyst and putting a hotter camshaft in. The B18E without catalyst did 109 bhp which is quite nice for that engine size. The two litre engine was advertised by Volvo delivering only 109 bhp (80 kW) but every rolling road t...

Re: 480 GT breaking for parts!

Well, I have the same problem here, my 14-year-old great Volvo friend is almost counting the days until he turns 17 and will be able to get his drivers' license, to drive away with my 480. You cannot separate odometer from speedometer, it is one assembly. (Well technically you can, but you wou...

Re: 480 GT breaking for parts!

Just joined and saw your post. A while ago I lost the rear window sprayer off my 1994 480 GT. If you have that small part available I would love to do a deal ? I have had the vehicle from new and the only other problem I have concerns the odometer which stopped recording about two years ago at appr...

Re: Petition for rear lights. Sign up !

Unfortunately, no. Rear light clusters consist of three parts (apart from the unit that holds the bulbs), a black back part with the reflectors, a coloured lens (orange, red and transparant) and a smoked front. This makes remanufacturing complicated and expensive. There was a German manufacturer, th...

Re: Timing belt change 1994 2.0 B20F

Try the cheapest kit out of Conti, Gates and SKF. INA is usually a tad more expensive and offers no quality advantage compared to the aforementioned three. When you are changing the timing belt, change the water pump (they are cheap, 20-30 quid) and the alternator belt(s) as well (depends on whether...

Funny, the info centre going haywire, that is what happens sometimes in my car, too. Either it displays everything, or it freezes (display stuck), or it remains blank. And it always comes back to life. Can't seem to find out why, because it never happens when I am testing the instrument cluster in m...

Re: Am I mad?

Let's bring some sanity in this story then, shall we? :) Remember, ANY time spent to a non-exotic (exotic as in: worth tons of money) old car is futile. If you want to be completely sensible and rational, buy a Toyota Auris Hybrid. First, make an inventory of what you have got. Three complete cars, ...

Re: Am I mad?

Did it take three hours to swap the alternator, or three hours to fix the one you have taken out the car? Dead alternators aren't a specific Volvo 480 problem, they will die sooner or later on any car (for example I had a Ford Focus where it died after less than 100,000 miles / 8 years). The hardest...

Re: ABS Fault Problem

When ((ABS)) and ((!)) are lighting up at the same time, it is most definitely a faulty accumulator. The scary part: in an ATE MkII system not the inlet vacuum but the accumulator provides pressure for the brake booster. So you are not only losing ABS, but brake boost as well...

Re: Mystery sponge

The instrument cluster is on its way, but somehow the tracking information got lost on its journey across the North Sea; both PostNL and Yodel don't know its current whereabouts. Don't be alarmed, and don't be surprised either when it will be delivered today! Don't re-use the remains of the sponge, ...
