Re: Couple of electrical problems

1986/1987 cars have VERY flaky electrics, they were the Volvo mechanic's nightmare. I once worked on a 1987 car, which had all sorts of strange failures (engine did start, but no brake lights, dashboard dead, etc.), turned out to be a bad socket of the "15" relay supplying power to the rail that is ...

Re: breaking LHD 2.0

If the engine doesn't end up finding a home, we are in need of a 2ltr sump - our GT's has an old weld with rust around it, OK for now but at some point it needs changing. Please bear in mind if you have to scrap the block. The sumps are a standard Renault part, 77 00 857 504 or 77 01 648 829 is the...

Re: How to fix the speedometer cable connector

Even a sorry looking board may work fine and a board that looks like it's been produced yesterday may be faulty. You should check and re-solder the joints of the connectors (blue/yellow, yellow/red or green/grey depending on model year), because that is the #1 cause of failing speedometers. A "secon...

You could pull the SRS warning light bulb (or install an instrument cluster without SRS) and install a non-SRS steering wheel

Re: Now it's getting silly!

It's both the location and the reputation of the 480 that makes this car unsaleable, even if you slice the price in half, even if there is no coronavirus. There's an immaculate Volvo 480 GT Turbo for sale in The Netherlands, same mileage, always stored dry, well maintained. It has been posted for sa...

Re: My Storage tips

You forgot to mention 1a: Fill up with ethanol-free fuel, preferrably RON 98. Do NOT use E10, as the ethanol will trap water and after three months of storage, ethanol will be on the bottom of your tank, then a layer of water and finally the fuel. I can skip 2, 3, 4, 5; the car is on its winter whee...

PS: Martin, have you already swapped the instrument cluster? After its long journeys through Hermes-hell I am very curious it will actually work. :)

Re: Awww! Mothballs!!

I seem to be one of the "lucky" people in this Covid-19-ridden world, that has been swamped in work and so does my wife, both organizations we work for are going through challenging times. On top of that, both children are at home because schools are closed, so we have to help them with school work ...

Re: Volvo Enthusiasts Club

Ah, sounds like the Volvo Klassiekervereniging, the official Dutch Volvo classics club. "No true Volvo!" one of their officials told me, "the quality is Volvo unworthy!". I almost punched the bloke in the face. I am a member of their club though, because they have to admit members to their club with...

Re: Shame! Shame! Shame!

Oh, I've seen this many, many times before. Every time a boy racer (we call them "white caps" or just "caps") lays their hands on a 480 Turbo, they soon abandon the project when they've ruined it, because they lack both the brains and the means to finish it. I've heard of a story here in The Netherl...

Re: Get a load of this! period dealership photos 1988

I started to browse the (very expensive) pictures offered on this web site, followed the link of the photographer who made the pictures of the dealership, because obviously this guy was active in the late 1980s. Just being curious to life in the 1980s and 1990s and clicked on the very first picture ...

Re: Favourite 480 memories

There is a pretty posh family living at the end of the street. I think the man in the house must be doing pretty well in business since he is always driving brand new Mercedes, BMW and Volvo. He gets thumbs up from me every time he drives by, as you don't see many special cars here (mostly Skoda and...

Re: May 2020 Mobile Mini Meet

I see things from the positive side, when this corona winter is over, I will have the desperate urge to leave the country for a trip, just to taste freedom again. The 480 has MOT until January 2021, is currently filled up with Shell V-Power (no ethanol) and has its battery disconnected, so when this...

Re: Odometer motor

I have literally a big IKEA box, the size you can hardly manage to carry on your own, full of speedometers, tachometers and stuff. I can send you one speedometer for free, you only have to pay for the postage. Before you start spending money, check if the cog wheel is put in correctly. Turn the trip...

Re: black cable cut behind dashboard

Hello Jean-Henry, First of all: measure the resistance over pin 6 and pin 12 of the grey connector on the cable side (not on the instrument cluster itself). It should be around 3 ohm (can be a little more, but not more than 10 ohms) If you measure open circuit (infinity), measure across the cable un...

Re: Volvo 480 in York

I'm not in the UK, but mine is semi-daily (as in: when both my wife and I need a car) and there is a daily driven 480 (a red 1993 480 S, 2 litre w/o info centre) in the same town as where I live. The owner has my telephone number in his WhatsApp favorites list, in case something goes wrong

Re: So, today was the day...

If you have the VEM out, break out the soldering iron, as it is just like the instrument clusters some broken solder joints (usually those around the relays)

Volvo 480 in York

A member of the Dutch forum spotted a 480 in York

One of the prettiest colours ever applied to a 480!
